We thoroughly loved our stay at this A & O. Very clean !!! very friendly staff & for an additional 6.00 Euro we had an excellent breakfast also. There are main streets walking distance. One for shopping & a few restaurants. Bus and street car service close by where you can connect to go into the Cathedral area. There is an excellent Thai restaurant nearby also. We visited the Dom (Cathedral), Lindt Chocolate Factory in this town. We took a a little train tour of the town which we took from outside the Cathedral. Very nice !

Room Tip: Lovely clean large hotel, elevators, and laundry is available. Please note that when travelling wit...

The hostel's location is reasonable central near Rudolfplatz (not quite sure why the booking confirmation recommended travelling to Zülpicher Platz, I think it's easier to go to Rudolfplatz and then just pass through the archway near the Sparkasse cash machines; continuing straight on for approx. 100 metres will take you straight to the hostel). About a mile's walk to the cathedral if you prefer walking into the city centre.

Nice reception area with free wifi (paid-for wifi in the rooms), coffee from machines, and all sorts of hot and cold drinks as well as very reasonably priced snacks and items such as toothbrushes, shower gel etc. available from reception throughout the night. Staff were extremely helpful with information regarding the local area and any other questions I had - have stayed in 5-star hotels with less attentive service.

Good standards of cleanliness, rooms (I slept in a 6-bed dorm) equipped with a desk, a reasonable number of chairs and sockets, free shower gel, paper towels and small disposeable beakers. They do charge a very small fee for bedding if you don't bring your own. While the hostel charges for credit card payment, there is a cash machine in the lobby area.

There are lockers in the rooms, but bring your own padlock. If you're as forgetful as I am, the caretaker will open the locker for you - again, thanks very much for this.

Last but not least, the hostel is very good value - I got very competitive rates even a week in advance.

I stayed here with some fine fellows in September. It's a fantastic place to stay for a stag do, rugby tour or gentlemen's trip away. For a small surcharge, levied by Security Steve, they let you do whatever you like. Much like the rest of Cologne (and eastern Europe more generally), it was essentially lawless.

The rooms were comfortable and very well appointed, with large receptacles available to drink from. We found that there was plenty of room for activities.

There are games (including pool) available in reception, which Reception Steve welcomes you to play at any time of day or night.

Highly recommended for a wild time!

My friends and I stayed at A&O during a British Beer Society trip to Cologne - it is well placed for a number of the pleasant shopping streets and there are some interesting bars full of men very happy to help where possible - we even had one offering us a free trip to a sauna which was nice of him.

Good place for all really, and decently priced when compared with the rest of Cologne.

It is likely that you will need to take a taxi to the old town, unless you get a lift with a nice man of course

Very clean hostel one minute away from Rudolfplatz (from where you can take public transport to any part of the city), free wi-fi in the lobby, and great sleeping quality, since the hotel is not located in some kind of bulevard. I have stayed there for two nights. The 4 bed room that I was sleeping in was not very big, but I didn't have any problems with that since I spent there only 7hrs per day just to sleep.

As a general observation, we found there to be a real lack of atmosphere, but that was soon the least of our problems. After checking in and being assigned a room on the 5th (and top) floor, we entered the room to find it was like a green-house. I.e. with 3 huge windows, it was literally like a sauna. We asked to be changed but received a fairly unhelpful response and were given 2 small fans to use.

It was impossible to enjoy our stay when the room was so warm. (I should add, we were in a separate 2 bedroom room paying just over £90 per night for 3 nights.)

In summary, we got off to a bad start with the room and things never improved.
The main positive with this place was the location, which suited us however there are other similar hotels/hostels literally a black away that were in much better condition and were much cheaper.

We feel we paid a decent amount of money but received a very sub-standard accommodation 'package' in return. I suggest if you are looking for a room, look elsewhere. If you are looking to stay as a back-packer in a dorm, I cant speak for that.
