Good location, massive modern room - very pleasing stay. The best of the 3 hotels we stayed in on this trip through Germany and Belgium. The beds were very comfy and the room clean, hotel situated 1 minute walk from local station 2 minutes train ride out of Cologne

As I travel for business location would be my first criteria and it is right next to the Uban. The rooms are quite big and clean, breakfast is boring so I would recommend to cross that road and find some excellent bakeries within a minute's walk of the hotel and all offer good breakfast choices from 6 am. The service is quite good, BUT no wifi !. No doubt that its main selling point is the location. It's right beside the Hansaring S and U-bahn stations, and the Dom/Hauptbahnhof are no more than 15 mins on foot. When travelling for business this hotel is sufficient. enjoy

The Azimut boasts that its rooms are among the biggest in the city, and that's probably true (unless you've booked a suite somewhere fancy). Our room was the biggest I've ever stayed in. You could have a half-decent game of rugby in there and not bump into the walls. The bathroom is also huge, the beds are extremely comfortable and everything is fresh and clean. However, I couldn't agree more with the reviewer who talked about the "seeming helplessness of the staff" to deal with problems. Reception is crammed into a tiny space on the ground floor and the staff are totally overwhelmed at the peak check-out time. Tip: check out MUCH earlier than you think you need to. The queue to reach the desk snaked round the draughty entrance hall. We arrived around this time and wanted to drop off our cases. An overworked receptionist waved us into a tiny side office. No-one took charge of the bags, marked them with our names, etc. I was rather nervous about leaving them, but there was no other option: no secure luggage room. I needed to use the internet, but Wifi wasn't working for the four days that we were there, and when I asked if there was a facility to check-in online for my flight and print boarding passes, the receptionist shrugged and said no. I asked about an internet cafe nearby, to be vaguely directed up the street. The cafe was shut. There is a "restaurant" for breakfast - it looks like a sparse works canteen. We didn't bother, specially when the price for breakfast is 15 euro a head. Are they kidding? There are four excellent bakeries within a minute's walk of the hotel and all offer good breakfast choices from 0600. There's also a bar - patrons are allowed to smoke (yuck!) and the smell pervades the staircase. The small gym is OK - a few treadmills, bikes, etc, and some weights. Apart from the huge rooms, the other selling point is the location. It's right beside the Hansaring S and U-bahn stations, and the Dom/Hauptbahnhof are no more than 15 mins on foot. The location and room size MIGHT persuade me to return, specially if travelling with children, but I reckon that better service may be on offer elsewhere.

Stayed there for a weekend, Feb 13. Booked through booking.com, hotel got the booking wrong room type and cost! After complaining it was sorted. Rooms are nice and clean, location good BUT no wifi! Wifi has been broken for 3 weeks, what happened to German efficiency? This was a real draw back. Staff on reception were amateur. Breakfast, was boring and uneventful, very basic and not worth €15 each per day.

Not the hotel's fault, but Cologne (koln) is 1 dull place!

The room was more or less what you'd expect of a room & the Hotel quite handy for public transport, but this was overshadowed by a number of niggles & the seeming helplessness of the staff to deal with them.

The check-in & -out process was continually interrupted by phone calls, leaving you twiddling your thumbs & generally slowing everyone down.

We were incorrectly charged visitors tax.
At the time of the stay, this applied only to private trips. Ours was a business trip.
Since then the highest administrative court has ruled the tax to be completely illegal & must be refunded, ex post facto.
Under stadt-koeln_DOT_de there is a page: "Tax for the promotion and advancement of culture", or "Kulturförderabgabe" as it is known.
There you will find an online PDF-Form "Tax Refund Form" completely in german, which needs to be filled out & sent (via your Hotel) with a copy of the original bill.

What is particularly annoying about this, is we asked (in fluent german) on check-in about this & none of the staff even knew there was a visitors tax & as the printer was out-of-order on check-out, we had to await the post to discover this. We are now in the time-consuming process of getting a refund.

My Emails were all ignored.

The keycard system is faulty: in the course of the 18 hours we spent there, we were locked out of the room 3 times & each time, had to have the keycard reprogrammed. The staff said "you put it in your pocket with your credit-cards didn't you?". If the technology has shortcomings, just blame the customer!

The lighting-concept was curious: to illuminate the bathroom, you have to turn on the light in the bedroom, which is fairly stupid if you happen to be sharing a room.

The TV was tiny & the remote was unresponsive.

The room was very large, making the TV appear even smaller & was only just warm enough.

The shower was warm in the evening, but tepid in the morning.

During our stay the Internet was out-of-order & other guests told us it had been for most of the week.

We were warned to keep valuables in the safe, as thieves were currently at large.
The Lifts were secured by keycard, but the staircases were wide open!

The 2 Lifts were a bit like London buses: either there is none, or they both come together.
This is because they
work independently of each other & understandably everyone presses both buttons, wasting time.

I think there is better value-for-money to be had elsewhere...

Nothing bad about this hotel, although if you are having a short stay in Cologne, it might pay to stay somewhere closer to the centre.

Rooms were absolutely huge for some reason, could have fit about 4 double beds in there, might come in handy for parents travelling with young kids. They were really quiet which was good, and the beds were great.

We Liked the location to the Dom, distance and the convenience to the airport. Room was massive and breakfast had a good selection.

Good value for money, we'll stay there again if we were to return to Cologne.

The only negative thing about Cologne is that taxis wouldn't take youngsters under the age of 4 unless you provide your own car seat, not practical for tourists.
