“'The place' in Cologne for those who love fish!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012 via mobile

Looking for a fish restaurant! This is the place to go in the cologne area.
Most famous and an absolute must is the 'scampi pfanne'. In case you want something else for your main dish, you have to take the mini version as a starter. We often share one! Why. You will find out if you get that garlic taste on the last piece of bread it is served with.
Furthermore the atmosphere is great. The spatious terrace make it even more special when the temperatures allow it. really surprising to see how an area dominated by the factories where the diesel engine was invented. You can see how the clash between old factory and new urban development creates new neighborhoods.
One downside. They only serve fish. If you have invited somebody who does not eat fish, that person could go home hungry.

“Excellent value for money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2012

I've visited Scampino on a number of ocasions togetehr with colleagues. The restaurant can be a bit tricky to find, but worth looking for! We payed 170 EUR for wine, main course and dessert for 5 persons - all which tasted fantastic. This is a very "back to basics" restaurant - they dont over complicate things, know what they are good at and stick to it!

“This is a "must visit" restaurant in Cologne”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2012

This is a wonderful mediterranean-style fish restaurant which I would certainly recommend trying to visit when you are next in Cologne. It is a little way out of the centre (but wonderful if you are staying in the nearby New Yorker Hotel). Both the menu of fresh fish and seafood (which varies day by day) and the wine list are extensive. My Pulpo Gallega (Octopus in olive oil and drenched in garlic) was delicious and mouthwateringly tender. The loup de mer filet, cooked in olive oil and lemon was also truly superb. This restaurant is certainly not formal and so you would not feel out of place whether you are dressed for business or simply enjoying a casual night out with friends. The bare wooden tables are large and so give the feeling of plenty of room and the acoustics are good so it is easy to have a normal conversation without having to shout or strain to hear what someone is saying. This is good as the restaurant does get busy as the evening progresses. There were so many things on the menu that I would like to try so I will definitely return very soon and I will certainly have to try it in the summer when the terrace overlooking the Rhine is open.

“Okay, but didn't have fish”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2011

So this is a fish place and I don't like fish, take that into account when you read my review. I started with the goat cheese salad which was very good. A large piece of goat cheese wrapped in filo dough and baked and then placed on top of a mixed greens salad with a light vinagrette dressing. Very good. The bread is fine, served with olive oil. I asked for pasta with tomato cream sauce, NO FISH, and got pasta with alfredo-type sauce (language barrier - I don't speak German). It was very bland. My colleagues all had fish and thought it was good. I only give it average because the service wasn't great. They didn't offer much in to help out since I don't eat fish and one colleague has a shrimp allergy. Really the whole menu is FISH so know that going in if you are not a fish eater. If you are like me and going with a group who all eat fish, don't expect help in finding something to eat.
