“Clean, efficient, lacking character”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2007

This hotel is clean, almost clinically so, but lacks any real character. The room we were offered to start with had a connecting door to the next door room, and as a result we could hear everything the guest next door was saying.

We asked to be moved, and were offered a self catering apartment room, which was much better. There seemed to be very little in the way of bar areas in which to sit and relax.

The breakfast was good, the staff were very friendly. The hotel was a good 20 minute walk from the centre of this small city and we did not feel particularly safe walking to and from late at night.

There were no restaurants within a 5 minute walk, and although the hotel had a restaurant, they had no tables on the first night we arrived.

If you are travelling to Bonn for the Christmas markets this is not a particularly suitable hotel - it's too far from the markets, has no ambience, and no nice place to meet up with friends in the evening.

Most of the Kanzler's accommodations are impeccibly appointed service apartments for business travelers staying 5 days or more. Fortunately, they also offer spacious hotel rooms for shorter stays. We stayed two nights to attend the opening of the "Angkor" exhibit at the nearby National Museum. This was the most comfortable room we stayed in during our 9 day visit to Germany.

The hotel obviously caters to demanding business and government travelers. Its features include broadband Internet, comfortable bed, large closet with iron and board, minibar, well lit bath with huge bathtub...and even electrically powered blackout curtains to adjust time zones. As our photo shows, the view was attractive as well. A wonderful breakfast buffet (included) had a huge selection of breads, toppings, cheeses, eggs, meats, fruits, coffee and juices. Front desk staff were efficient, helpful and multilingual. The rate includes use of a small but well equipped fitness center.

In light of this, $162 per night (not including Internet) + $17 for parking is an excellent value...cheaper, nicer and cleaner than places we've stayed at in NY or London.

We ended up having both dinners in the hotel's Italian restaurant, La Dante for about $90 each night, including ample beer, fresh salads and excellent Italian dishes. The waiters were a bit slow at times, but good on the whole. Keep in mind that many Germans still smoke like fiends in restaurants so mind where you sit.

There are no other restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel. A subway stop is less than a block away, but our schedule was too tight to venture out.

  • Liked — Immaculate, well appointed rooms
  • Disliked — Not walking distance to anything except the subway

I have stayed in many 4* hotels and this has to be one of the best that I have visited.

The room was spotlessly clean. It had a bath with a shower over it, minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, plenty of wardrobe space, flat screen TV, safe, desk and seating area.

The buffet breakfast had just about everything you could think of.

Staff were very friendly and professional.

Public areas were also spotless - even the secure underground car park was brightly lit and as welcoming as a car park can be!

The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Bonn, in walking distance of the Rhine and Museum Square. There is an underground stop very close and it's about 5 stops to the centre of Bonn.

I would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay in it again. I would also choose this chain when staying elsewhere in Germany as I had such a good experience.

This is a nice and clean hotel, not too far from Bonn's city center. It is perfect for longer stays, as the rooms are large. They consist of a small kitchen, a basic bathroom a small dining area and a living area. Oh yes, it has a bed too. The bed is not too grand size, but sufficient.

The rooms are clean. The hotel itself will appeal more to the business or adult traveler then the young or family traveler. The t.v. has loads of channels.

The reception had a few of the best people doing the reception I have ever encountered. And I have seen several hotels from 1-5 star. Everyone was greeted with a smile and good help. Eventhough the lobby seemed underequiped during checkout.

The breakfast is good and sufficient. Even though on a busy day the breakfast is not restocked quickly (empty plates).

The Italian restaurant has a friendly atmosphere, the food is o.k.

The carpark is handy under the hotel.

All in all a nice experience from a relatively unknown hotelbrand.

My wife and I with two friends stayed at this hotel for two nights on 5th and 6th May 2006
the hotel is very modern as it has only been finished last year I believe, the rooms were very large with a seperate kitchen with fridge and microwave and sink, a seperate living area, and the bedroom was also seperate, there was a safe and plenty of wardrobes, and outside a patio area with table and chairs, the breakfast was exeptional with so much choice, something for everyone. There is also a very large secure underground car park.
The only downside was they would not help to take you luggage to your room, for a four starr hotel this is not acceptable. we would stay at this hotel again.

The Derag Hotel Bonn is nicely located on the edge of central Bonn and is quiet easy to get to by car from the A565 Autobahn. The hotel also has a Metro/Tram station within 200 yards making access to the centre of Bonn easy, tickets at Apr 2006 cost €1.90 each way.

The restaurant food is of good quality, although some may say slightly expensive compared to what else is available in the area. The quality of public areas is good, and the secure carpark under the hotel mean no driving around endlessly searching for a parking space.
