“Good room but located in the middle of nowhere”
Reviewed September 12, 2009

I stayed for 2 nights, selected the hotel because it was next to Godesberger Allee. The Maritim is located in a business district with no restaurant or shopping opportunity besides a gas station nearby which may be - and for me was - a negative aspect. The hotel does not offer free WLAN internet but T-Mobile hotspot service is available for 29 euro a month.

The room itself was large for a single room. Decor is very dark and old-styled but in good shape. There was no noise from other rooms but a Tram track is build directly below the hotel. It didn't disturb me but some people may be bothered by the noise every 10 to 20 minutes when a train passes.

Breakfast was very good with a broad selection of food available. Although it was very crowded staff was always able to clean up tables and assist.

To sum up the hotel can be recommended if you stay for business especially considering the location. Leisure travelers who want to discover Bonn should definitely look for another hotel. Accordingly the entire hotel is nothing special but offered a good and constant level of service to me.

The Maritim- home to so many climate change conferences that it induces Stockholm Syndrome in regular visitors- check out our Facebook group... Great place for a 'back to the 80s' convention.

The good: Great buffet breakfast (wide choice of German breads, cold cuts, wurst, herrings, hot stuff, pastries, fruit...). Room service breakfast good. Excellent, if pricey, cocktails (some of the best Caipirinhas anywhere) and good beer. Same building as the conference halls, so you can nap between all-night meetings.

The bad: Large, but dark rooms (90 % have only one small window). Small swimming pool with surreal fresco of a woman in a dressing gown and a naked child. More nudity in the mixed sauna- not for the faint hearted. Lousy unchanging limited room service menu (except breakfast which is good). Inadequate staff number who seem surprised that the hotel fills up during conferences with guests who actually want to order food. The key cards (which also operate the lifts) never work for more than 48 hours.

The ugly: The curtains haven't changed in 2 decades (one colleague who stays in the same room each stay counts the increasing number of moth holes - like the night sky.) Some rooms are directly over the power lines of the tram track that runs under the hotel. Internet a whopping 15 Euros noon-noon. Mile-long corridors like something out of The Shining.

Survival tips:
- Insist on a 6th floor room with a balcony (20 EUR extra), or a part-suite with large windows, or stay somewhere else.
- Subscribe to t-mobile wifi (29 EUR for a month compared with the Maritim's wired 15 EUR per day) - may not be accessible without a balcony room- check your coverage where you intend to use it!
- Room service breakfast is good value if you specify what you want, and is served until 1300
- Get outdoors- run in the Park, walk along the Rhein, hire a bike (from the hauptbahnhof), take a train to Cologne
- Always eat out: there are good restaurants nearby including Tao (fusion- 5 mins walk), Jasmin (Chinese- 5 mins walk), Rohmuehle (15 mins by taxi- great terrace on the Rhein, and jazz), the fancy Italian in the Koenighof Hotel (15 mins by taxi), Bastei (30 mins walk along the Rhein or 10 mins by taxi), and many great places in Bad Godesberg.
- Avoid the sauna unless you're comfortable with mixed sex nudity.
- The Piano Bar - dodgy 80's music, but everyone who's anyone passes through.

Stayed there on business for just one night. The hotel is perfectly adequate but somewhat soulless. Its location is out near the Deutsche Post tower and its therefore surrounded by offices. Bonn centre is a €12 taxi drive away and it's well worth the time and money to go into town.

Rooms are simple and adequate. Bar is pleasant enough, but my colleague and I were the only ones in there at 19:00 and on our return around midnight. Didn't try the restaurant.

All staff were very friendly and competent and if you're just looking for somewhere to get your head down it'll do.

If you like mirrored ceilings, lots of gold trim, dark wood, masses of fake chandeliers, cheesy musak everywhere, a general feel of 1982, and, worst of all, nothing at all in the immediate vicinity to escape to you will love the Maritim Bonn. I didn't though. It was awful. And that was before I had "enjoyed" the piano player in the bar!

The reason why I stayed in the hotel was because I attended a conference there so it made sense to stay in the same hotel as the conference. But even though it would have been very inconvenient to stay elsewhere I really wish that I had.

So what was my room like? Well, we had been booked into the "executive" floor 6 which was the top floor. The room had a balcony and the room was reasonably large. But the furniture and the room décor in general was very dated and a bit shabby. My room was a single and the tiny mattress was pretty uncomfortable - way too hard for my taste. Helpfully, high speed internet was available but at cost of €15 per day noon to noon (ie they had set this so you were least likely to be able to use the service). Wireless was also available but at a rip off of €8 for one hour or €29 for 30 days. It would have been nice if this was included in our rate but it wasn't.

Plus points? Well I suppose the view from my top floor room was quite nice. The buffet breakfast was OK. And there was a very friendly bar man in the bar who served lovely German beer. However lovely beer is available all over Germany so this isn't difficult. But everything else was pretty poor.

Unless you have a good reason to stay here ie you are attending a conference or visiting one of the many ugly concrete office buildings nearby I wouldn't recommend you stay here.

Stayed here for Fedcon 18. The room was large, very clean. Bathroom fully stocked, plenty of towels. Didn't use room service, but the restaurant had a very good buffet. The staff performed well despite the huge crowd. Never heard a complaint.

Stayed at maritim for business and was extremely impressed with the staff and check in service. It is outside of Bonn city centre, around 10Euros in a taxi from the train station.
I was given a fourth floor room but to my disappointment it was a smoking room - the room smelt of stale smoke. However it was well appointed and comfortable.

Hotel Piano Bar was lovely and had a great barman who made fantastic cocktails. There was also a live singer which was a nice touch. Drinks were quite expensive but on par with other 5* hotels.

breakfast was also good with a wide selection of food. Fresh food could also be requested at any time.

While there we ate at Rouhmule restaurant which is an old converted waterside building. It's right on the river front with a balcony with outdoor seating. The food & wine was fantastic and I'd definitely recommend this. BUT they only accept American Express or cash. So at 1am they had to ring us a taxi to take us to get cash which was not great - the taxi driver was fantastic though. But apart from that highly recommended.

Bonn park was also lovely and i'd recommend this if the weather was nice. It was around 27degrees while we were there.

Overall, good hotel not 5* but staff were excellent. I would stay there again but location was not great due to distance from city centre

I agree with a previous reviewer that this hotel has a lot of 1970 features. The price for the room is just too high for what you get. They have done some renovating here and there, but that's very marginal. Matrasses are horrible: cheap foam covered in a plastic sheet. I have a couch in the room that I dare not sit on - it's just too old.
It seems like they don't want to renovate, because then they miss all the clientele from the conventions.
It also seems there is now a camp Facebook group 'Friends of the Maritim'...
Staff is generally nice, but some of the senior ones are really harsh towards junior colleagues.
Location is good if you have autism and you like the view of office buildings.
