The world's largest mining museum is THE must-see destinations in Bochum. One can easily spend an entire day exploring floor after floor of exhibits detailing the history and technology of mining in the world. But a good 2-3 hours will give you a nice overview and give you time to take a guided tour going down 20 m below surface to see an exemplary mining shaft. That was definitely the highlight of our visit for the adults as much as for the kids in our family.
After getting the feel of the underground work do not miss the opportunity to go up the headframe. If the weather cooperates you get some nice views from the top.
The exhibits in the main building are extensive! As interesting as they are the presentation does feel a bit dusty and could probably use some updating to make it a bit more accessible for today's public.
The guided tours are in German only. However, visitors can ask for English info sheets to take along. On weekends, the underground exhibit can be explored with audio guides which are available in English as well. Groups can book guided tours in English with advance notice.
