Arcadia Hotel Bielefeld

Myself, husband & baby stayed at the Arcadia Hotel in Bielefeld for 4 nights in August 2011. Along with us were family members who used 2 other rooms. We have previously all stayed in this hotel when it was called 'Tulip Inn'. The hotel is clean & comfortable. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room, but we took a travel kettle, which solved that issue. I booked this room through www.booking.com and requested a cot for our 9 month old baby. When we arrived the receptionist said they didn't have one, which was a major problem for us, so we did complain. It was not the receptionists fault, and she eventually found one & put it up in our room herself, which I believe was good customer service. It was very hot when we were there, and my only complaint about the room was that is was abit stuffy (no aircon), but that wouldn't put us off staying there again. We used the hotel car park, which was handy & reasonably priced - about €38 for 4 nights. We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel, as I thought €15 per person per day was expensive for our group. We ate at Knigge Cafe in the Old Town (really nice pancakes & waffles), and Alex cafe, across the road from the hotel. Both reasonably priced, with friendly staff & good food. We had a lovely dinner at the Castle hotel - would recommend it.

A ten minute walk from the station (turn right, out of the main entrance) and simply walk straight down the main High Street (Bahnhof Strasse). You’ll need to cross a few roads (best to take the underpass but aim for the left exit) and head towards the Rathaus (town hall). Next to that is the theatre and on the next corner you’ll be at your destination, the Arcadia Hotel.

A quick registration form to check in (no need to show your passport) and you’ll be free to view your room, in our case on the 4th floor, but they have two lifts. They may sound a bit creaky, but they work fine.

NOTE: They do offer one floor for smoking guests, the 3rd, but it’s best to request this at the time of reservation if required.

The twin bed room was very big, modern, light and extremely comfortable. The beds are good, additional pillows can be requested and will be brought up instantly and the bathroom was well furnished.

The TV only had local channels with the exception of CNN but there was a mini bar, access to wi-fi (pay as you go at extortionate rates- use the free computer in the foyer for your email needs) and you’ll get a bath tub and shower in the bathroom, plus a hairdryer and extra power point for shaver/toothbrush . Both rooms were exceptionally clean.
There is no in-room safe or air-con but we found the room very warm so you’ll need to open the window if necessary.

Cost for the night was 59€ and we stayed four nights, thoroughly enjoying the experience as the location is quite excellent with the Old Town a few minutes’ walk away.

Finally, what’s all this nonsense about rude staff? They were exemplary in manner and professionalism. Perhaps since the takeover (no idea when) things have improved because we were treated with courtesy, respect and everyone was extremely helpful.

This hotel is now operated as "Arcadia Bielefeld".
It is a standard hotel in the range. Relatively large and clean rooms and standard breakfast. Nothing fancy.

The hotel staff is not very customer oriented unfortunately. I bought a wifi access at reception for a day (12,50 euro/day 5 euro for 30 min) and was guaranteed it would work everywhere in the hotel, including my room. Unfortunately the wifi range was limited to the lobby area.
This wasn't a huge problem, but I was shocked at the unprofessional attitude of the service staff when I raised the issue. I was refused a refund on my order. I would have been happy with an apology or excited about a partial refund. Instead I got some blunt answer about the internet service being operated by a third party outside of their control.

Mercure hotels usually always deliver what you pay for, this was no exception. The rooms were modern + large, good A/C, nice minibar, all what you'd expect so no need to dwell on those points. A mention must be made for the extra bed, often this is a crummy camp bed, here it was a very comfortable single bed, thank you Mercure !

The hotel has an unbeatable location in Bielefeld, just 1 minute walk from the Altstadt and 5 minutes walk from the main shopping area. Despite the trams passing outside its a quiet area and has a big car park garage underneath.

The breakfast was one of the best yet in Germany and it was nice for the waitress to provide hot chocolate in tea pots for my girls, with milk added to the hot chocolate to cool it down for them. Five star service in a 3-star hotel !

At only 90 Euros for a room on a weekend, this is outstanding value. Just a pity there's not much reason to travel to Bielefeld again !
