Novotel Aachen City
Ranked #2 of 41 Hotels in Aachen
Certificate of Excellence

This hotel was used as a stop over on a driving holiday to Lake Garda. The hotel is excellent in everyday.
Great service, new & clean with good sized bedrooms. Staff were great with our kids & gave us advice for eating out in Aachen.

The breakfast was also great with loads of choice. The car park was tricky to find but once found it all made sense.

Would recommend!

Arrived to be greeted by friendly staff on reception and they were helpful when we needed extra pillows and directions in to the old Town. A perfect location for exploring old centre - only 10 minute walk away. We used the onsite parking, which was convenient and reasonably priced. There were modern, stylish rooms, good value for money.

We stayed for a night at the end of July. Not the first time we stopped here, but probably the first time in more than 5 years. The room does not look as innovative as it looked some years ago and the bathroom might need some refurbishment in the near future.
But, as expected, everything was spotless, the bed was very good, and the breakfast German - plenty, varied and tasty.
The overall cost of the stay is lower than in neighbouring Belgium and France cities.
It is situated very close to the historic centre and the underground parking is easy to use.

While staying in Aachen always like to stay at the Novotel, nice location, comfortable rooms, friendly and helpful staff, reasonable gym and spa. Prices can vary depending on how busy and time of year.

We stayed here for two (2) nights and here are our trip notes:

PLUSES:
+ Location - this hotel is ideally situated, an easy 5-10 minute walk to the Dom and city center.
+ Clean rooms – our room was #406 and it was super clean. As in, not a speck of dust in sight! Good size with a sofa bed and chair and enough space to move around comfortably for 2 adults. Bathroom was very, very clean and amenities are provided. There’s an in-closet safe to store valuables as well as a tea kettle and fully stocked mini bar.
+ Central air conditioning – the air conditioning system worked well. It’s built directly into the ceiling and the temperature control is easy to adjust. It’s not one of those wall mounted air conditioning units that are noisy and/or difficult to control. Very nice to have with the summer heat.
+ Hot water and strong water pressure – no problems whatsoever. There is both a shower and a bathtub.
+ Satellite TV – with German, English, French, and Chinese news language channels.
+ Front desk and restaurant wait staff – multilingual, professional, courteous, and was always helpful.
+ Breakfast buffet – very large generous breakfast buffet with plenty of cold and hot choices to suit all tastes. The breakfast here is really quite impressive!
+ Restaurant – ate dinner once at the hotel restaurant and the food and service was good. Prices reasonable. Large wine list.
+ Quiet – hotel was very quiet and noise was not an issue whatsoever.

MINUSES:
– Extremely hard bed – our bed was quite possibly the hardest, most uncomfortable hotel bed ever. I’ve slept on Japanese futons softer than this!
– Leak in the ceiling in the WC – the air conditioning unit started leaking water from the ceiling into the WC at 3AM in the middle of the night which was quite annoying. Thankfully, hotel management was attentive to the problem and fixed it without any delay.
– Free wi-fi is very slow – there is free wi-fi available but it is extremely slow and quite frankly, useless. If your room booking includes high speed internet access, make sure you log onto the “Novotel” network as this is the high-speed network you should use (not the other ones that pop up and certainly not the one that's indicated in the instructions/username/password given to you upon registration at the front desk).
– Neighborhood – the hotel seems to be surrounded by casinos and a few "adult-entertainment" type of businesses. Although we never experienced any issues with regards to safety and security, this is worth noting. Always be aware of your surroundings.

SUMMARY:
In sum, the pluses outweigh the minuses which is a good thing overall. We like this hotel and would like to stay here again but unfortunately, the very uncomfortable rock-hard bed makes getting a good night’s sleep very difficult. (If you like your beds to be as hard as the ground you're walking on, this is the place.) Next time, we might try the Mercure or another hotel which is a bit closer to the main part of the town.

Room Tip: Request quiet room away from the lift/elevator.

A typical Novotel in terms of rooms, decor, furniture. The location itself is a little down-market, with what seems to be all of the gambling destinations in the surrounding buildings and streets. However there are also some nice restaraunts a short walk away so nothing to worry too much about. Breakfast was good, a very nice selection and the staff seemed very polite and helpful. The only real negative for me was the wifi. Impossible to connect in the room without standing in the doorway, and even then it was tricky. I was in room 217 so can't comment for the other locatios within the hotel although I noticed a similar comment in another review. Need to get this sorted as a LAN cable isn't helping with mobile devices.
