“Great place ro unwind...”
Reviewed March 17, 2012

This is an excellent weekend retreat hotel- 90 minutes from Hamburg in Schwerin. Right on the waterfront,it has all that you need for a quiet holiday by the Ziegelsee lake. Of course, for outdoor enthusiasts the lake offers great sailing and canoeing experiences.

Rooms are well equipped, reasonably priced and great value for what you spend, you have wireless internet, really good food-especially the selection of fresh water fish. The salmon that I had was one of the best...

So, if you are looking for a quiet private holiday to rejuvenate your mind -and you are in the vicinity of Hamburg or Berlin try this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose the roms that have the waterfront view...

Perfect location at the Ziegelsee lake, although a little outside the town centre. Helpful staff. Large rooms. Good restaurant with reasonable prices. Varied and tasty breakfast.

This is a mdern, contemporoary hotel a fair distance from the centre of Scwerin on the lake shore. It feels like a three star rather than a 4 star as rooms are a bit spartan. Reminded me of a nice University Hall of residence rather than a hotel.

Breakfast was fine, staff were very helpful and generally not bad for 1 night.

Given my interest in the importance of breakfast we'll start with the buffet; it's rather good but somewhat let down with rather sharp fruit juices. It does have a good selection of teas. Although, being British, I do question just how much of a selection of tea one requires at breakfast. Usual collection of lovely breads, cheeses and meats. I had a boiled egg which claimed to be soft but that would have been 2 hours previously - it's the hazard of the buffet breakfast and I don't blame them for it.

Their idea of a martini cocktail is not my idea although the end result was perfectly drinkable. if you want a dry martini then this hotel is not for you. Given that this appears immediately after my breakfast review I hasten to reassure you that I refer to the previous evening and that I wasn't imbibing martinis straight after breakfast.

Location is all and this hotel offers a wonderful location right on the lake but at the cost of being a good 20 minute walk from the town. I would thoroughly recommend that you stump up the slight extra cost for a room with a view of the lake otherwise there is little point in staying here. The rooms are adequate but without a view I wouldn't have been impressed. In the summer months there is a terrace outside the dining room and if you want to eat then it is worth reserving a table.

The staff were friendly and helpful particularly the gentleman from the back office who, after I had failed to connect my mac to their wifi system, offered me the use of a PC in his office. They offer free wifi which is to be applauded.

Converted grain warehouse with enormous rooms, and wonderful structure. Everything seems very new although it was converted several years ago. The location is a little isolated as it's in an area of semi-derelict dock and warehouse structures.
It's about a 20 minute walk into the centre of the old town, but the route is very atmospheric, with old properties interspersed with refurbished ones.
Back in the hotel everything is wonderfully designed, although the bar and restaurant are not enormous, and were extremely busy the weekend we visited.

The Hotel am Ziegelsee is a converted flour mill set on a lake in Schwerin. It is located just outside the town centre, but is worth the 15 minute walk from this beautiful lakeside city with its stunning Schloss (Castle). The hotel is family run with a friendly atmosphere. We had an apartment (a large room with a kitchenette) located on the top floor with an amazing view of the castle and city. It was very spacious with a contemporary look. Breakfast was adequate, but nothing special and we did not always find the staff as friendly as we would have liked. There is a great sauna (with the sound of singing birds to relax you!) and a formal restaurant. The hotel is aimed manily at German visitors, but welcomed us Brits warmly. If you are going to one of Germany's most beautiful towns then head for the Ziegelsee for something different.
