“Lovely little gem.”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

Our experience at this charming hotel was just great. The room was very comfortable, quiet and there were lamps that one could actually read by. The staff were very friendly and helpful with information about this delightful town. They offer a very nice breakfast in a beautiful breakfast room which is included in the very reasonable rate, something of a rarity now. It is easy walking distance to the old town and Christmas Market which was very nice. You couldn't get a better value than this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a comfort room at the back which is quiet.

Perfect location, 5 minutes walk from the centre, and another 5 to the train station, yet quiet. This time I've been assigned a spacey, I think a triple room (with a double bed and a sofa), and a large bathroom (with both bathtub and shower, and good water pressure in both). This is a family-run hotel in a historic building from I think 17th century. The staff is helpful, yet rather formal for my liking but maybe that's their style. Most of them speak decent English, though some staff members will always try to switch to German, with almost every new sentence, as if they did not recognize their guests. This is quite weird. The bedrooms are well appointed, and indeed very clean. They are quiet and have double doors for better privacy. Price varies depending on when you book, but within a reasonable range, and breakfast, a bottle of water and wifi connection are included in the room price. The breakfast is quite okay and served in a nicely historically decorated room. The WIFI seems to have a good reception throughout the hotel but the bandwidth is quite thin, especially in the evening when probably more guests are using it it tends to be very slow, and in fact inacceptable by modern standards. There is also a printer connected to a PC in an office room downstairs, very useful if you need to print your boarding card or similar. For all this, I'm happy to recommend the hotel. The only thing to improve would be their Internet bandwidth.

This was a stay en route to elsewhere in Germany. We are so glad we picked this hotel! Car parking in the hotel parking platz for a daily payment of €5. All the staff, including the owner if he doesn't mind me calling him 'staff' (!), are kind and hospitable. Well-placed for walking in the town. Rooms are comfortable and well-appointed. Bathroom is so clean it's as if no one has used it before. Breakfast is really good. No evening meal so eat at one of the very many local food places.
After a day of seeing the sights, including the very many plaques to famous students including Gauss and Bunsen, drinks are available in the hotel lounge. Just ask. Nothing is too much trouble.
I would highly recommend this family-run hotel.

Room Tip: Just enjoy...

Enjoyed our stay here as the rooms were large and the breakfast was very good. It is an easy walk from the central train station and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The shower was large and water was hot. The wi-fi was free and was a great addition.

We stayed here for two nights. First, the positives. Everything was clean. The breakfast service was fine. The first morning nothing hot was offered, but the second morning someone offered to bring us hot eggs. The room was large, and the walk-in closet was a real bonus. The location is very close to the train station as well as the pedestrian mall.
However, the negatives outweigh the positives. First, there is a smoking room right as you enter the hotel. It is hard to believe (with the medical knowledge we now have, and the laws of Germany) that such a place still exists. Because of the "gladly ignore the non-smoking signs" policies of this hotel, you must keep your windows open. Unfortunately, our window looked directly out at the garbage pile. Which was "added to" late at night with lots of clunking bottles and conversation, and then before dawn the first of six trucks noisily did their job right under our bed. The smell of the garbage and the deafening sound of the garbage trucks put an end to sleep and any romantic notions we might have had.:) The bathroom was spotlessly clean, but did not match the hotel pictures in any way. It was a typical efficient (read tiny) place. It was amazing to have a shower with such great pressure, but with only half-a-door, it flooded the bathroom. Finally, I feel badly that I cannot speak German. Having said that, I would expect that a front desk clerk might speak English. Not so in this case. This is not a criticism, just surprising given our previous experiences in Germany and that this is a university town and a hotel that clearly caters to university personnel (and was historically a place for visiting professors to stay).
If you are a nonsmoker, I believe that you could find a better accommodation in this university city. Honestly, for the money the experience we had in Hannover was far superior for sightseeing, food, and accommodation. (they are a stone's throw apart from each other, but light years apart in amenities)

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the side street where the garbage trucks are. They come EVERY DAY!

While we certainly take criticism and always try to improve our product there are some things we don't accept as they are simply not true.
We do not employ any people who do not speak at least English and this has to be and is fluent. It looks like you’ve mixed up things during your travel through Europe.

Concerning the public service removing garbage once the week we have to state that this doesn’t happen in our environment. The taken photo shows by the way an electrical distribution casing on a public street across the hotel.

We understood that you don’t accept that we provide one room (and one room only) which allows smokers to smoke inside the building. This room is closed by door and specially air conditioned. We do this simply to offer smokers one (a bit more) comfortable facility. We might change that. But we don’t know why you are mentioning that at all.

Close to the railway station and to the city centre. Rooms are OK, but much depends on which room you have. There are quite small single rooms that I didn't like very much when I stayed here last year. But this time I was in a double room (single occupancy), which was pleasantly large. Good shower. My room was at the corner next to the hotel's light ad. That goes off around midnight. The main street (Goethe allee) is not very noisy, but you occasionally hear the trains.

In spite of its name, the Hotel Stadt Hannover is in the centre of Gottingen. A warm and efficient reception, a nice room (rack rate 118 euros) with spotless bath and cheerful modern decor. Best shower of any we have met on our travels - very strong and as hot as you can stand. the best thing about this hotel is the generous feel of all its services: wi-fi is free throughout, they did a load of washing for us at no extra charge, they changed our beds from a double to twins right away on request, and so on. The lady on reception even 'fixed' my computer! Pleasant people, bright and cheerful room and good location. If you are coming to Gottingen, this is a good billet.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are quiet - don't know if the front rooms, which are on a busy st...
