“5 star hotel, 4 star facilities and 3 star service...with one exception”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2014

This hotel has had mixed reviews and we have stayed there for 4 days and there is a mixed ambience. So here is the list of Good and Bad having just spent 800+ Euros at this hotel...

1. The Good

The location is excellent and being in Assmannshausen is far better than being in Rudeshiem. There are ferry docks just outside and there is at the chair lift to take you into the Hills. The location is excellent

The Hotel is an old country House and has an annex, a restaurant, a terrace and another restaurant for reservations. There is also a small bar

The rooms are good - ours had an excellent Rhine view with a small terrace. The room was well sized, a double bed and the bath room was also good. These were good. The views were excellent and they have a good chef.

The criticisms about the noise didn't seem real - here are trains everywhere down the Rhine and these stop at night so it wasn't a problem. The comments about the smell also seem unreal - there was a slight musty smell in one bit of the hallway but the place is old but the rooms were fine and very airy.

The bad

Wifi- its free but you have get a code everyday and the connections are really very weak so its very frustrating

The service - with one exception which was the excellent and helpful gentlemen at reception who was a model of service - the approach from this 5 star hotel was indifferent. This included waiting for one lady to finish sorting out the flowers for 10 mins before serving us, the breakfasts, where we were never asked if we wanted any warm food ( all the 3 or 4 star hotels did) - the kindly gentlemen who served us on the last day did... and then of course there was how to embarrass your guest.

When we arrived little was explained but we had booked dinner that night and so went to what we thought war the restaurant. There was no one around so we sat down and the conversation when like this

Waiter: this restaurant is reserved for guests of the hotel who have reserved
Me; I am guest and I have reserved
Waiter: this is for the special guests who have reserved and you must eat in the stube
Me: so though we are guest we can't eat here
Waiter: you must eat in the stube

Now I am totally prepared to accept that this was th gourmet restaurant and we might have gone to the wrong place but as a huge foodie there was a) no offer of would you like to eat here tonight b) can we book you tomorrow or c) would you like to see the menu...it was not the service of a 5 star hotel and its about 15 years since I was embarrassed in a restaurant

The swimming Pool is also closed

Conclusion - so basically this Hotel has an excellent location, good rooms but it's not a 5 star hotel. It could be astounding but it really need to work on the customer service angle and sorting out some details ( good wifi is a must for most international travellers).

I enjoyed the location, the room and the view but it could have been breathtaking.....

Room Tip: Always get a room facing the Rhine

Made advanced reservations here, but after seeing the torn carpet in the lobby and the smell in the room, decided not to stay. The building is old, many artifacts that seem interesting, but the place looks shabby.
Also note that although they say they have internet, there is a 5 euro charge for 30 minutes use. Although if you are willing to pay this much for a room, 5 euro is not much, but is just annoying, like the 5 euro water in the room.

Found a really nice place down the street, not as cute, but smells better.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

This is a very old hotel that has many updates. The woodwork and stained glass are beautiful. The lobby is decorated with big gold framed chairs. The room was small but nicely down. You had to pay for the internet. The restaurant area was amazing with the grape vines overhead. You could catch the ferry to take you up and down the Rhine river. Not much to see in the town itself. There was a service elevator that took us to the 3rd floor. We ate at a local German restaurant which was delicious. Parking was hard to come by but it was free. This hotel is on the east side of the Rhine river. There is a ferry close by that can take you across the river. There is a magnification castle right across the river. Worth staying once.

I stayed here once before and wanted my wife to experience it. We had a junior suite with a Rhein view. The hotel is very old but kept beautifully. The suite was large and furnished nicely with old style furniture. The buffet breakfast was a bit disappointing for such an impressive place, but we loved the hotel. If I am back ing the area, I will definitly stay there again. A bit pricy I thought, but worth it for the experience. Just a few minutes from Rudescheim by car. The town, Assmanhausen, also has many places to eat

My husband and I stayed here three nights as part of a Germany vacation. Let me first day that the bed is so low it almost sits in the floor. This could be a real issue for older guests. Also, there is no elevator to get to the upper floors. The breakfast was good and the location is good. The front desk staff were very helpful and spoke good English. The shower pressure was so stein it knocked the handheld off its holder, so showering was a chore. The rooms are also very dark. The toons were very clean.

When we checked into our room we were impressed with the beautiful view of the river. We left for dinner and when we got back we returned to 15 black spiders on the ceilings and near the windows. The hotel staff said there is nothing they can do about them during this time of year - so be warned! I had to sleep with one eye open...

Our family group of 4 adults stayed here after flying into Frankfurt from the USA. We received a friendly welcome upon checking in and had two junior suites in the annex. Both rooms had balconies and wonderful views of the Rhine. The annex building was loaded with antiques and the rooms were just what you would expect in Old World charm. The buffet breakfast was elegantly presented and one of the best I have seen. We absolutely loved this hotel and Assmannshausen.

Room Tip: The junior suites are worth the price, especially with a river view.
