Owner description: This majestic statue, over 30 feet tall, sits atop Rüdesheim's National Monument.

If you have a few spare hours while visiting Rudesheim, do go up to the monument. Rudesheim is lively, loud and jam packed with tourists. The monument can be crowded, but as the monument is a matter of German pride, a certain amount of reverance is in order, and it is much more peaceful. You can hike to the top or take the Rudesheim Seilbahn ( you can buy a combi "ring ticket" for the way down to Assmannshausen plus the ferry to Bingen.) The Seilbahn cable car takes you quickly over the vinyards. The views of Rudesheim and the Rhein are amazing. Once at the top, there are restrooms and wooded trails that are part of the Rheinweg. The monument is enormous! A great photo op! This is a perfect place for a picnic! Just a sidenote- when you reach the end station of the Seilbahn, you can buy a commemorative wine glass set and a small bottle of sekt!

The monument, called Germania, by the Germans, signifies the unification of the German states around 1870. We made a day of it by first taking the tram up and enjoying the view and having a nice lunch overlooking miles of vineyards. We past by the cafe and walked down the hill a ways, in order to have a beer and light lunch outdoors, which was very enjoyable. After visiting the monument we visited the falconry , which was just Ok. A lovely walk through the woods of about 30 minutes brought us a chairlift down to Assmanhausen. And as luck would have it, they were having a wine festival. Even without the festival Assmanhausen is a lovely little village with cafés and restaurants along the river. Worth a visit

This is a large monument above Rudesheim which can be reached by driving or walking from Rudesheim or viewed as part of a round trip with cable car, chair lift and steam paddle boat between Rudesheim and Assmannshausen.
It commemorates the end of the Franco Prussian war and the unification of German States.

This large and beautifully cast and sculptured monument is well worth the chairlift and walk from Asmannshausen or alternateively the cable car ride from Rudesheim.

When I saw this magnificent monument, I thought back to the years of two German states. What a great way to remember the days of glory. The grounds from the monument offer a stunning view of the valley below.
