If you have a few spare hours while visiting Rudesheim, do go up to the monument. Rudesheim is lively, loud and jam packed with tourists. The monument can be crowded, but as the monument is a matter of German pride, a certain amount of reverance is in order, and it is much more peaceful. You can hike to the top or take the Rudesheim Seilbahn ( you can buy a combi "ring ticket" for the way down to Assmannshausen plus the ferry to Bingen.) The Seilbahn cable car takes you quickly over the vinyards. The views of Rudesheim and the Rhein are amazing. Once at the top, there are restrooms and wooded trails that are part of the Rheinweg. The monument is enormous! A great photo op! This is a perfect place for a picnic! Just a sidenote- when you reach the end station of the Seilbahn, you can buy a commemorative wine glass set and a small bottle of sekt!
