Good exercise to climb the steps to the castle. Beautiful views of Marburg and surrounding area. I had been there several times before taking the tour and enjoyed the history and artifacts shown. Interesting painting of Martin Luther.

It's good that we had my brother-in-law with us because he is fluent in German; no one from the staff museum spoke any English. They didn't accpet credit card payments either: so you can pay only in cash.
The museum itself is not interesting. The castle is just okay compared to other a way more impressive castles in Germany that we've seen. The only thing I liked about Marburg Castle were the views.

The review posted by Misterpineapple in July 2011 sounds a lot like our experience. The castle was interesting and offered some great views, but good luck finding the rooms you want to see, getting any information in English, and really getting much of anything out of the experience (if you don't speak German). After going up way too many steps for my companion (who had a knee problem), we had problems even finding the entrance and that was just the beginning. The ticket men did not speak English (and got frustrated that we didn't speak German). We spent most of our time trying to find places (we only found about half of what we wanted to see), and when we did they just weren't shown well (for example, one room (Prince's Hall, I believe) is primarily used for events, it seems, and was being set up for some sort of banquet dinner). We didn't see any other tourists; maybe we just went on a bad day, but the experience was a let down. Glad I saw it, but wish it had been more (English speaking) tourist friendly. Who knows - maybe there is a ton of cool stuff we missed because we simply could not find it because of the lack of signage and English speaking staff. If my experience is typical, it's not worth the hike for anyone with any physical issues or with a stroller.

If you do have physical issues or a stroller, there is a road (Landgraffe-Phillipp-Strasse) you can take and avoid the majority of stairs, but it is pretty bumpy (brick) and might be too bumpy for an umbrella stroller (and is definitely not high heel friendly). There is also an elevator inside (not sure it would accommodate a double stroller though).

Good setting overlooking city, but nothing dramatic inside. That is unless you, like me are interested in church history, where there is 'the official' painting of the meeting at Marburg in 1569 with Luther Melanchthon, Zwingli etc on the question of transubstantiation.
Near the entrance there is a camera obscura.

Well, my tour book indicates that this castle is the reason to visit Marburg. We enjoyed the walk up and views offered but the castle itself was unimpressive. Perhaps our experience would have been more memorable if we hadn't already seen so many more impressive castles scattered across Germany. The route we took had a distinctive Grimm's fairy tale theme with props staged sporadically but it was lackluster in comparison to Germany's greats. However, if you are in Marburg, go ahead and take the climb so you can mark it off your bucket list and head back down to the marktplatz where the Old World Charm is intact and good times are easily found.
