Welcome Hotel Marburg
Ranked #4 of 13 Hotels in Marburg
Reviewed February 4, 2014

I came back after a few weeks and the hotel is always a good choice. Rooms are really confortable, clean and very well maintained. The bed is great and pillows are a dream in itselves. Wifi is faat and free (quite a good combination of factor nowadays) and breakfast is great. If you want to make some fitness for 13 € you can have fun at the Phisycum gymn 5 min walk from the hotel. If you are hungry you're right in the town center so you have a lot of choice and you don't have to take the car, you can just walk.

A modern feel to this hotel goes hand in hand with the cleanliness and service of this hotel which was good.

The problems are with the rooms - although a decent size there are no double beds (2 singles pushed together) and the rooms are so hot that I had to open the windows in the middle of winter to get comfortable enough to sleep. This also applied to the bathroom which was far too hot for comfort.

Breakfast was a nicely laid out buffet affair with a reasonable choice.

With hardwood floors in the room. The furniture is simple, functional and comfortable. The bathroom has a real small shower stall. The hotel is close to the old town. Nice breakfast buffet. Friendly staff.

The Welcome Marburg is not a 4-star hotel by US standard: the furniture is minimalist (no wardrobe doors, no drawers, just cubes and a hanging rod, no safe), and the bathroom amenities are limited to two soap bottles hanging on the wall. The make-up mirror is excellent for women 6-ft high or more. On the plus side, however, we found the bed comfortable (I love soft pillows), the desk very helpful and the food excellent. The breakfast buffet served a great coffee and better croissants than I had found in a long time. We had dinner at the restaurant and also loved the food. The hotel is ideally located across the street from the free elevator that takes you up to the marvelous old town.

Room Tip: Our room was on the street side and yes, it can be noisy.

The hotel is in a good location, being located just a short walk from the old town. I'm surprised the official rating is four-star - I would rate it nearer three-star. The furnishings are fairly basic and, for example, you are only provided with wall-mounted squeeze bottle of hair/body shampoo rather than individual small bottles that you'd normally expect from a 4-star hotel. However, the rooms are comfortable and OK for the price.

Although the website advertise "international TV channels" and "Sat TV", please note that the hotel is not geared up for English speakers, even though English is the most commonly spoken 2nd language across Europe and is the international business language. The only English-speaking TV channels amongst the more than 50 channels offered are CNBC, Bloomberg and BBC World News. All credit to those alternative hotels that pay a little bit more to offer the Sky Satellite subscription that includes the primary BBC channels with ITV and Channel 4..... but not this hotel, unfortunately.

And so to the title of this review. This hotel is targeted at the business traveller, like myself, and promotes a free, high-speed Wi-Fi service throughout the hotel. Unfortunately, the connection is very poor and the connection frequently drops. In addition, even though you sometimes manage to get a connection, the router does not provide a connection to the internet and the service is therefore rendered useless. It also does not matter where you are in the hotel. I chatted to another guest who had tried three different rooms in an attempt to find one where the Wi-Fi was working, without success. Even the main computer in the lobby for guest use was not working!! If your business travel depends on having an internet connection, please disregard the hotel's advertised services; there is effectively no usable internet service.

If the internet or English-language TV are not issues for you, this is a good budget hotel. As other reviewers have noted, the buffet breakfast is particularly good.

And lastly, in common with most continental Europe hotels, the pillows are appallingly soft. Lay your head on the single pillow that is on the bed and it squashes down to 2-3mm thick. Pointless.

Walk across the road, go up the lift and your there in the Old Town. Clean, large and modern room. Breakfast has a very good selection. We ate early, so not crowded. Staff helpful. Would stay there again due to its excellent position. Wonderful sandwich/cafe in the arcade next to Hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street if background disturbs you. We didn' hear a thing though!

Modern hotel very conveniently situated in town centre, but even our room, which wasn't facing the street, was affected by people shouting at night. The room was generously sized and had adequate, but budget, fittings and furniture. The breakfast was good but very crowded. A busy hotel in a busy town.
