Much of this area was destroyed by aerial bombing in the 1940s. I lived in Frankfurt during 1970s and at that time one could still see scars around the city, though much had been rebuilt. The careful and authentic rebuilding of the Roemer area over several decades means that now visitors can experience it much as it was hundreds of years ago. On a recent autumn day I was able to stand in the plaza and get a feeling for what it could have been like when it was the city's heart and heartbeat. There was the bustle of humanity walking through and milling about, spontaneous performances from street artists, and the overall hum of life going on. Be sure to visit this site.
