We had our mind made up to go to one of the places that all tourists go to. The night before we were at Champions sports bar and asked our waitress where to get great authentic German food. She recommended Kanonesteppel and we are so glad she did. We went through an empty beer garden thinking that it was possibly closed. Once opening the door to the establishment we were pleasantly surprised. It was packed but the waitress found a place for us at a table with an older gentleman and his wife. They proved to be invaluable with food and drink suggestions and helping us order. We had shcnitzel with green sauce, sausage, kraut, and beer. Every item was the best that we had during the week at all the other restaurants. The kraut was so good. We also had apple fritters with ice cream for dessert. Unbelievable texture to the ice cream. If you think you have had creamy ice cream in the past then try this. We also had chocolate pudding with a vanilla cream sauce. Wow. Our server spoke very little to no english and it was never a problem. She did a fantastic job and seemed to enjoy the fact that we were having such a good time. We truly enjoyed the couple sitting with us as they shared not only food and drink suggestions but shared a little German history with is as well. Overall.......the best dining experience of the trip.

Typical place for locals - no advertisements, barely a sign on the street... But this is by far the best "apple wine" tavern in the city of Frankfurt. Veal liver is definitely my favorite but "green sauce" can also be not missed there. And of course "Apfel woi" - just be careful with that. After 3-4 glasses you might have troubles walking back home.

A real find in Franfurt. Full of atmosphere and always busy, this is my second visit and it was as good as the first. Had exactly the same main which was Schweinshaxe (grilled pork knuckle) and it was superb. Huge, tasty and very, very tender. There's plenty of meat on the bone and the crackling is pretty good too. With a couple of Erdinger weisbeirs it's just a great meal and full of people having a good time. The Schnapps are OK (peach is popular) but they're not the main event however, plenty of folks were imbibing, enjoying and having fun. Only thing I wouldn't recommend is the 'hand cheese with music', a very acquired taste.
If you're in a crowd it's great and you'll get a table to yourselves otherwise if you're a couple then chances are you'll table share but that can be fun as well. Probably best to book a table anyways. There are plenty of seats outside which is pleasant because they're in a courtyard off the street. Just soak up the atmosphere and enjoy.

I am studying in Frankfurt, so when my boyfriend came to visit I wanted to introduce him to proper German food. This place was the best way to do that. Traditional salad, schnitzel and potatoes, you really can't go wrong. It was so tasty as well!! Such a typical German pub too with the traditional benches and coat hangers on the sides too. Definitely will go there again.

Traditional dinner place, with tables for 16 (you have to share of course). Its a bit noisy, and the stools/benches are a bit hard but who cares. The service was prompt and friendly, the portions are massive (my liver and rostbraten was just great). That and a beer for <20 Euros. Nice.
