“The worst service ever”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013 via mobile

We went for dinner while staying at the hotel. The food on the buffet was lukewarm, the shrimp looked like it was taken out of a can. The a la carte food was better prepared but still average at best. We waited for at least an hour after eating with empty glasses, we had planned on dessert and an additional bottle of wine but after waiting for an hour we just asked for the check and left.

“Didn't stay”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2013

While staying at the Steinberger Hotel, we thought we might try this place. It looked like fun. We visited in July, 2013 and the heat was just horrendous. There was no seating inside although it was cooler inside. We were taken outside without much option for a respite from the heat. We looked at the menu, the server did not approach us again. So we got up and left.

“Great Facility - So-so Steak”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

On our last day before departure, we dined at Restaurant Unterschweinstiege because it was the best restaurant available at the Steigenberger Airport Hotel. The facility was beautifully authentic and the service was good.

There were a limited number of items on the menu, so I chose the steak for my entre. Although I liked the presentation, the steak was less than wonderful. It was a bit tough and not very flavorful. At a cost of 28 euros ($36 US) I expected something better.

There were not very many guests in the restaurant, which should have been my first clue. I would not order a steak there again.

“Expensive but good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2013

This is a worthwhile alternative to the other places to eat at the Steigenberger Hotel. It is expensive but the quality is very good and our server was great. We were there during a heat wave and the dining room both inside and outside were quite warm. Actually uncomfortably warm. Our poor server looked like she was going to melt. By the end of our meal we looked that way too. I had the asparagus with hollandaise and smoked salmon and it was excellent. My wife had the ravioli made with cream cheese and served with asparagus. She said it was quite good. Our son had weinerschnitzel and it was OK. he also had pomme frites for an appetizer that tasted quite good dipped in the pesto sauce that came with our appetizer. Very nice wine list. We had a wonderful german rose. I would definitely come eat here again. But since our experience at the hotel was so miserable I doubt we will be back in this area.

“A respite from the airport and generic hotel restaurants.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2013

Restaurant Unterschweinstiege is located adjacent to the Steigenberger Airport Hotel. It is located in a house that has been present for over 200 years in what was previously an expansive forest but is now a mess of grey hotels. As such, it is really a great place to feel a certain degree of authentic and traditional German culture but without traveling far from the airport or hotels. It's ambiance is endearing without being kitschy. The food itself is quite good - generous portions, seasonal choices and typical country fare. There is also a very nice salad buffet that you can order as an individual meal or complimentary to your main entree. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food and location.

We found the service to be absolutely excellent. All the staff were very friendly and were completely bilingual in German and English (and likely other languages, too). Our server in particular was superb as she accommodated some of our specific requests and even provided us with the history of the restaurant and helped us purchase beer steins as souvenirs because we had such a lovely evening. This is a great place to get off the beaten track of the airport scene and relax for a long meal. On our next trip to Frankfurt or through the Frankfurt airport, we will make a point to return here to enjoy yourselves!
