If you want to have the different kind of gelato - Coccola is your place!

They have really creative flavors - from avocado-salt-caramel to oatmeal chocolate but also some traditional flavors like chocolate. And they have different flavors every day...My all time favorite: cinnamon semolina.

One thing they really need to improve is the managing of the customer line...the lines are really long (long long) during the weekends and there is only one girl serving the gelato (there is another one replenishing/helping out)...and that takes AGES. For somebody like me that usually takes more than one serving more than suboptimal.

Coccola sets a new standard in innovative flavors combined with an excellent gelato consistency. Only second to places like Gypsea Gelato in Hawaii or La Sorbetteria de Bologna, this place truly knows how to rock your taste buds. Unfortunately, in the meantime, the local folks have discovered this little cold Mekka, too, which means that lines can be ridiculous on a nice sunny day. However, it is definitely worth the wait.

As mentioned, the flavors can be quite interesting: From milk rice to oats. From pumpernickel to basil. Even salted caramel avocado! My favorites by far are milk rice, as well as their tiramisu which I officially crown as the best tiramisu gelato I have had to date.

My only gripe are the long lines – clearly they need to hire more staff to keep up with the customers. Still, worth many many repeats...

I found the place by coincidence last year in summer as it is pretty hidden in the Schustergasse and was very surprised by the flavours offered - milk rice with cinnamon, gingerbread, poppy seed, lemon-basil. Not wanting to experiment from the start, I tried the flavours that seemed to be more traditional. They were really excellent, from taste to consistence.
I ended up having 9 scoops - all tasted incredibly good.

Before they closed for the winter (in October), I went back and bought a couple of liters that I hoped would last for a couple of weeks....but they were gone after 2.

A pity the opening hours are so limited compared with other gelaterias in Darmstadt and that they close for such long time during winter and they just reopened for limited hours in March.

Portions are decent, even for somebody like me that could eat gelato for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Service is very attentive.

My regular Saturday-post-sports lunch...

It is just the best ice cream. You can tell they use just top ingredients from the fact that if you take a flavor like apple the ice cream tastes like it!! they change every time following the season so do not expect to find always the same flavors. Recommended for vegans.

This place is fascinating... Most flavors are exactly what you would not expect to find in a gelateria. However, most of the flavors tried were superb. My all-time favorite was the milk rice gelato. Amazing. Don't expect to find standard flavors like chocolate. The owner puts these "once in a while" on the menu. If you are a keen food experimenter, then I strongly encourage you to visit this place. If, however, gelato means for you vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, then you might as well go elsewhere.

Excellent service, great tucked away location in a small square. Definitely, I am coming back!
