The Friesenkeller is located just across the canal on the side of the Hambug City Hall. You get there by walking to the end of the bridge and then walk down the stone-stairs.
The room is open but still cosy as it is oozes of German "Gemütlichkeit" - the German way of having a good time.
Try the Friesenteller - mix of turkey and steak with pan-roasted potatoes and sauce bernaise. You will NOT leave hungry.
Another good hint is the potato soup - chunky the good way.
And prices...... The level is really low compared to Danish prices, so I was satisfied. ;o)

Having decided to spend the day sauntering around the beautiful Christmas Markets in Hamburg we came across this lovely spot. The interior is traditional German and is warm and welcoming on a winter's day. We were promptly shown to a table right by the window at the water's edge. From my side I had a wonderful view over to the Rathaus and the Christmas Market. Our server was very cheerful and was managing her section with joyful efficiency. We all ordered from the local specials menu, and were certainly not disappointed. My Gruenkohl mit Pinkel was as good as any I've had in Bremen. (Sorry)
Washed down with some cold local beer and rounded off with a rather nice coffee. I'll certainly be coming back.

Try the Wienerschnitzel, probably the best in Hamburg. The fried potatoes wich comes with the Schnitzel is the German way. A use of the bathroom is an experience!

Located right at a corner on Jungfernstieg overlooking one of the canals this restaurant has a perfect location. Weather permitting you can sit outside on their terrace almost floating in the canal.
In Germany it is common for the older generation to have a hot meal at lunch, so this place is filled at lunch time.
They have great dishes of traditional food. Wienerschnitzel, Roast beef with sauce tartare etc. The place is full for lunch and dinner - so book a table.
Service is mostly great - the meal comes quickly and is deliciously prepared.
