We went there with a bunch of friends and had booked a table before. Despite our booking, we had to wait for more than 40 minutes to get a table that in any other place seats 4 (and we were 7 people). Had to wait even longer to get the food. The food was great but the waitress mixed up a couple of orders (as she didn't take any notes when we ordered).

Some of my friends went back there two weeks later and it was exactly the same story.

There are so many good places in Hamburg with excellent food AND service that you can easily avoid this one...

Two important things about this restaurant you need to book even during the week during summer and don't be in a hurry the service is good but the wait staff are stretched. Oh, it's not the place for a romantic first date. Take these into account and you'll have a good night. The food here really is delicious, with excellent ingredients cooked traditionally without too many concessions to tourist tastes that you sometimes get. The crowd was mixed but locals outnumbered travellers which is always a good sign.
We shared a seafood mixed platter for two with scampi, prawns, herrings (not the fried variety). My wife had a version of stroganoff which she said was the most tender steak she'd ever eaten. I opted for steak tartar. Obviously some diners had ordered this and were surprised when the raw meat pattie arrived because the waiter made sure I understood what I was ordering.
There was a side dish or musrooms and spinach to round out the main course. These are big serves so I'd be tempted go do two entree sizes instead.
Three dishes, two beers and a glass of wine 90 Euro.
This is definitely a must visit if you are in Hamburg.

Very traditional food, but cooked with heart and soul. The schnitzel was excellent and the service was quick and attentive.
Go here instead of the Rehperbahn ;-)

This restaurant is at the end of a street and it looks really nice inside with dark woodpanelling and pictures on the wall, but I took a seat outside where the tables filled the end of the street.

For starters I had smoked eel on a brown bread which was good and for main course I had a T-bone steak (500 g) which comes with roast potato slices, mushrooms and spinach. Steak was juicy and the sidedishes were simply wonderful.
