“Cool or dull; up to you”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

I loved the place. It's not beautiful, it's certainly not the heart of Rome or Paris, or monumental in scale - apart from the excellent Maritime Museum - so if you're easily bored and you expect full tilt glamour and a constant parade of wonders, try somewhere else. What I found was a quiet, stress free jumble of modern architecture and old red brick, residential and commercial, all shot through with canals and docks.
I walked in from Jungfernstieg through the red brick warehouses of Speicherstadt and explored everything on foot. Finished up walking across Baakenhafenbrücke to climb the orange HafenCity viewing platform on a very wet day, looking over the harbour, then returning through the Unilever HQ - tiny market inside on a Saturday - and warming up in one of the eateries near the Kühne & Nagel university.

“Hamburg's answer to Docklands! Even better....”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

This is a completely 'newly born' very centrally located district of Hamburg, much of it being built on Islands and land reclaimed from the port on the River Elbe. The Speicher-Stadt or district of Old Warehouses (as per the photo) are built on the edge of what is now 'Hafen (Harbour/Port)-City', they stem from the 18th/19th Centuries and add a historical flavour to this area. Most of the other buildings with innovative architecture are newly built. However everything blends in contributing to the 'ambience and elegance'. Apart from the Maritime Museum, the area offers other museums all within walking distance, as well as cosmopolitan restaurants, cafés, bars and shops. Since there is a variety to see here, such as ocean liners, cruise ships, the historic warehouses, the Maritime Museum and Mini-Wonderland, we bring many of our visitors (overseas and local) here. Hafen-City adds even more flair to Hamburg and sums up 'in a nutshell' the character of the City.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed June 10, 2013 via mobile

I visit Hamburg and the Hafen City area a few times a year, and it really is fascinating to watch this old warehouse district emerging as a thriving residential, commercial and retail populated city from under your very feet. Every time I go back some new district or block is up and others are on the way. There is a generally high end feel, with lots of bold and interesting architecture against the water on one side and the old canal warehouses and the city on the other. Hamburg is a good place to visit and spend a few days.
