“Very helpful and friendly - good value for money”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

Stranded in Hamburg due to a car breakdown a very helpful and friendly Taxi driver from 211211 booked us 2 x double rooms at Motel One Altona on a Friday night. The hotel is new, clean, basic but very nicely decorated. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. As we were out of Euros and needed the €10 for a taxi that had technical issues with card payments, the receptionist borrowed us the money from his own pocket reassuring us it would be ok to return the money when we come back next week - or the night shift who arranged for our food specialities to be kept cold - all done with a smile that deserves full mark. The location suited us perfectly as the garage was close by.

The only reason i am not giving this full marks is because the location is slightly farther out than I would have liked, and not quite in Altona as the name would suggest. However, it is only about a five minute walk to the S-Bahn which is three stops from the Reeperbahn and about 6 stops from the main station, which suited us perfectly as we were out early and back for midnight both days we were there.
The hotel itself is perfect for a short stay, the rooms were clean, comfortable and nicely decorated, the shower was great and despite the room being a bit on the small side there was plenty of storage for our clothes and both cases. (We stayed here as part of a two week trip around Europe so had large cases and alot of clothes!)
This was the second Motel One hotel we stayed in and the staff were friendly, helpful and professional.
I cannot fault Motel One and would always choose this chain if it is available.
Also, the location whilst not central was less than five minutes walk from a nice neighbourhood with plenty of good bakeries, supermarkets and small bars close by.
I would definitely stay here again if I went back to Hamburg and recommend it if you don't mind a less central location.

My airline lost my luggage. I was without an international phone and the staff was generous and kind with letting me use their phone and to take/give messages from the airline. I ended up having to stay an additional day due to this mishap and they kept me comfortably in the same room. The location is not ideal but is close enough to the train.

Positives:
* new, clean, practical and comfortable rooms
* friendl, efficient staff
* excellent German breakfast buffet with fresh fruit and various cold-cuts and cereals, although breakfast costs 7,50 €, but you'll get excellent Wifi access incl.
* digital German TV with alarm-clock function
* great shower
* great value for the price
* bar area in the evening with a nice selection of affordable drinks

Negatives:
* not a great location, so not many dinner possibilities: Grossneumarkt has the best offer of restaurants on walking distance.
* very small bathroom, fits just one person
* no phones in the room, but everybody has a cell, right?

Room Tip: There are only two fairly slow elevators available for a lot of guest. Try to get a room on one of t...

MotelOne Hamburg-Altona is one of four MO properties in Hamburg. The others, execpt for the one at the airport, are located nearer to the downtown area. MO HH-Altona is on Kieler Str, a commercial and residential thoroughfare and it borders on the disctrict of Eimsbüttel (residential area) to the east. The hotel itself follows the known MotelOne standard in supplying travelers with clean, functional rooms that offer the basic amenities (sink, bathroom/shower, TV) but no frills (no wardrobe, no coffee making facilities, no telephone). Breakfast buffet can be purchased for EUR 7.50 in advance or on a cash basis depending on your daily inclination. The buffet is ok but nothing special; if you are looking for something else, there is a McDonald's just up the street, the neighboring area around the Apostelkirche has one or two breakfast options (I recommend Cafe Knüppel, right at the Apostelkirche bus stop). As is the case with all MotelOnes, there is a small bar that also offers (microwaved) snack options. For a full lunch or dinner also refer to the area around the church or a bit further east, on Osterstr. There is a GREAT and cheap Asian place just opposite Apostelkirche (Lappenbergsallee 25) called Nanglo, and they do absolutely superb Korean, Thai, and Nepali dishes (I URGE you to try "Bur Curry", Nepali beef curry).

The hotel connects to the downtown area (including university, central station) via bus 4 (stop Apostelkirche) and to Altona (including Altona station) via buses 183 and 283 (stop Armbruststr.)

What I liked about the Motel One HH-Altona:
- clean
- efficient/functional
- friendly staff
- reasonable prices (59 for a single, 74 for a double)
- good public transport connections (see above for more details)
- relatively new furniture
- nice flatscreen TV
- nice shower

Disliked:
- maid service did not make up my room on one occasion; on reporting I was told by reception that may have been because my "do not disturb" sign was out for half an hour or so - maid service does NOT return to rooms. Feh.

Very suitable for business travelers and tourists who do not spend much time in their room. Honeymooners should choose something more romantic.

I was a bit dubious about staying here given it is part of a large chain and the price was quite reasonable. It is a bit soulless and a little over-white but if you are looking for somewhere clean and modern at a price that won't break the bank - you could do a lot worse! The hotel is well located and the food was good quality for the price (breakfast was included in our rate). The beds were really comfortable and everything worked perfectly. Yes the rooms are a little small but nothing feels too cheap and there is everything you would expect from a modern hotel. The hotel staff were all friendly and efficient - the restaurant staff, in particular, made sure that everything was kept well-stocked and I was pleasantly surprised by the price of drinks at the bar was not bad compared with British prices. If you want a good, clean place to stay, with a reasonable standard - I think this hotel delivers good value for it's price bracket.

I was a little hesitant to take my friend up on his suggestion of a Motel room (bad images of the cheap American motels came to mind), but upon entry to the hotel I was pleasantly surprised. It's not luxurious of course, cheaply decorated with trendy things, but funky color scheme and has a wonderful sense of flow. Friendly, efficient staff checked me in at the front desk and made me feel very welcome.
The room was well, you get what you pay for, but I was really surprised at how functional the space was. Everything was very clean, and although very small, I enjoyed every minute of my short stay. Keep in mind there is not even a telephone in the room, they literally don't want you calling them for anything. If you want something you need to get it yourself, and likely pay extra for it, but it's all part of that great price.

Room Tip: Just ask for it. Ask to see it first:)
