This hotel is all about the "wow" factor. The design (particularly the entrance and communal parts) will inevitably get heaps of attention from guests, but it's not quite 100%.

For example, the curtains are impossible to close with electric leads running up to the desks, which are shoved up against the oddly sloping walls in front of the windows. Mine had multiple holes in them. The bathrooms are tiny and difficult to use. Even as a slim, fit guy I had issues squeezing into the oddly shaped shower.

Breakfast and staff friendliness rank highly. The location is rough and ultra urban: expect homeless people, graffiti, rubbish and a very unsafe feeling as you make your way the 5-6 minutes from the S-Bahn stop down the dark road to the hotel.

If you want a showy, flashy, urban experience (Hamburg meets downtown USA) this is your place, but I can't help feeling the style doesn't quite match the substance.

Hello from Hamburg,
“Wow”-factor sounds very good – thank you for this compliment.

However, we are sorry to hear, that you had difficulties with the equipment of the room and bathroom. Caused by the historic building of the water tower, the interior is exceptionally and different than “usual” hotel rooms.

The district “Sternschanze” is colorful, individual and full of special places (bars, restaurants, boutiques) to discover. Maybe the surroundings conveys an unsafe feeling to visitors, but there is no reason to feel less safe than in other lively parts of Hamburg. On the contrary, you can benefit from the features of this interesting district. Our reception staff will gladly assist you with best advices.

We would be glad to may welcome you again.

Kind regards,
the Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg team

My husband was unaware of the hotel I had picked, so it was fun when we approached and saw this huge brick water tower, I said "thats our hotel!" yeah, right! We found free parking right out front (dont pay 20 euro via the hotel!) and found a very modern entrance area (husband perplexed) inside you see a tunnel like entry to the hotel via a long escalator, which is illuminated with water reflections and sound effects of dripping water...this only prepares you for arriving at the water tower/reception area! wow! Enter a hall of tall brick arch's that are illuminated as if you are still in an old water tower, throw in the water drop sound effects, modern/natural decor (which really fits in this ancient and historic building) and super nice helpful service (everyone speaks english), its hard to not have a smile on your face!
Dont miss the bar upstairs, its incredible, and later after exploring the nearby city, we got a busboy to take us to the top floor...what a view! at the same time fireworks were going off in the distance...fantastic! My husband was impressed! Oh, the room was quirky too! Great views, huge bathroom, super clean, and comfortable! I highly recommend it for a special stay at Hamburg!

Room Tip: The higher up you are in the tower, the nicer the room/view gets!

A novel experience. Yes the rooms are not the biggest but they are clean modern and comfortable. The food was good both at breakfast and dinner. The underground was close by and made trips about the city very easy. More than happy to stay there again.

I was in Hamburg on business, didn't get a chance to really look up the hotel as it was last minute, so can't comment on the history of the building. I will say, though, that the escalator entrance was a nice surprise and that the building inside is beautiful; combined modern and traditional styles quite nicely.

The rooms are of a very good size with a fantastic shower. Would have liked tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms as these weren't provided. There's also a wonderful 'pillow menu', as I called it, waiting in your room! A selection of pillows/hypoallergenic bedding/massager etc. They really go the extra mile to make you comfortable.

I tried the cooked breakfast, room service dinners, cocktails, and dinner in the restaurant. All the above were delicious, the presentation fantastic, and arrived without too long a wait. I recommend, in particular, the baked banana and after 8 tart - superb!

What really stood out to me, and the reason behind me leaving a review (which I don't often do) was the service from the staff. Every single one I encountered was friendly, helpful and eager to please, and everyone's telephone manner was wunderbar!

My only moment of disappointment was finding last night's dinner plates still in the room after housekeeping had visited. Although, this wasn't too much of a problem as I just left it outside the room and opened a window.

Would most certainly return and highly recommend to friends.

Thank you for a lovely stay, Mövenpick team!

Very impressively converted old building with wonderful views over the city right next to railway links (the U3 subway line more or less takes you from the city centre to the door of the hotel). Rooms extremely comfortable - pay a wee bit more for an upgrade to floor 16 rooms, well worth it. Try to eat in the hotel at night at least once as the food is great. They do a set 3 course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine - good value as well.

Stayed here for two nights in Sept 2013 and as the title suggests the stay could have been much better. The hotel is remodeled from a old water tower. You will mostly appreciate the architect than anything else in the hotel. Its like walking into a cave. The check-in was quick and smooth.

However, the rooms are very small. Even though all the amenities are available you somehow feel claustrophobic. Most of the major hotel chains have started giving free wifi, but this hotel charges you 17 Euro / day, which i feel is too expensive.

The breakfast is very nice. The hotel is clean and near to a train station. There are direct trains to main attractions like the harbor, city hall, reeperbahn etc. The best way to reach the hotel from Airport is by Taxi (Costs approx 20 - 25 Euro), since there are no direct trains to the Airport.

I requested for a late check-out. But it was out-right rejected, without even checking whether there is a possibility to support. However, there is a place to store the luggage and they give us cards to access the fitness area where we can change and re-pack the bags if needed.

Hello from Hamburg’s water tower,

Thank you for staying in our hotel and for writing this honest review.

We are glad to hear, that you were satisfied with our buffet breakfast and the central location of our hotel. As well we are happy, that you have benefited from the possibilities of our luggage room and the usage of our wellness area to change and repack your luggage after check out.

However, we regret to hear, that you felt claustrophobic in our hotel rooms. Due to the building conditions of the historic tower, the rooms are indeed smaller than in an ordinary building. We are sorry, that you couldn’t enjoy the special atmosphere of the historic building.

We apologize for having rejected your request of a late check-out and the missing explanation. During the month of September we were often fully booked and couldn’t grant a late check-out in order to finish the cleaning of all rooms in time.

We hope to may welcome you again in one of our Moevenpick Hotels & Resorts.

Kind regards,
The Moevenpick Hotel Hamburg team

This hotel is impressive from the moment you walk in. Going up the escalator to the hotel you can see the journey the building has been on to turn into the hotel is is today. Once in reception, it is nice to see a lot of the features are still there, and is very impressive.
ROOMS: They are very comfortable, and the window through from the bathroom is a really nice talking point. It is also very quiet, surprising how much noise the windows block out from this relatively quiet part of the city.
AREA: Everything is a short taxi ride away though not much in the direct area, you are still close to it all. Was around 20 minute taxi ride from the airport in rush hour traffic.
FOOD: I only ate breakfast here which was one of the best I have had on business. The continental section was so good I didn't even look at the cooked food on offer which is rare for me.
SERVICE: Efficient and professional.
