“best place to prepare for Hamburg marathon :-)”
Reviewed December 3, 2011

locatet straight between reeperbahn und fischmarkt its a perfect place to go out at night.
(or stay the whole night at the nice hotelbar, drink, listen good alternertive music and play table soccer. - the way to the rooms is very short)
we´ve got a free whisky at the bar after check in.
if you want to go sleeping before midnight and sensitive with sound use the free earplug at your room.
its possible to complete a marathon after staying here in less then 4 houers.

I totally loved this place.

It's old, grotty (yet clean) and a hell of a lot of fun. Not touristy, you hang out in the bar with locals, with awesome music. The bar is open until 4am.

Rooms are sparse, sheets are clean, shared bathroom and loo but there's not many rooms so it wasn't an issue. Wifi was free.

We stayed on a Sunday and Monday so I was disappointed to miss the live music although I undoubtedly got a better sleep because of it.

Drinks are cheap and generous (welcome shot of Jack on arrival). Breakfast is ok, not brilliant but does the trick. The restaurant next door has fantastic burritos (have a potato & vegetarian, to die for) and is open late.

What can I say - if you love a good authentic rock bar and have an open mind then you'll love it. If you don't, or want a good night's sleep then you won't. It was exactly as I expected, and I'll be back!

Room Tip: Room 12 is an awesome room for couples...

Why to stay:
+ unique rock'n'roll atmosphere
+ superb location
+ authentic bar, good music
+ clean sheets
+ open all night long
+ good value
+ free WiFi

Why to stay away:
- drunk people in the bar (not the staff though)
- pretty noisy
- breakfast is subpar

this is not a place for the lighthearted but it perfectly catches the essence of Hamburg - which is pretty rough as well.

I wouldn't actually call it a hotel - it's rather a bar which offers a couple of rooms. The rooms are very nice though: every single one is designed in a distinct theme. We stayed in the St. Pauli room which features a bunk bed for 2 people and is designed in a fan theme for the local football club. It was clean, not so noisy (window to the backyard) and suited me and my mate perfectly. I have also seen the 'Erich Honecker' single room - which seemed nice - and the double bed 'showroom' which is rather special: you'll sleep in a shopping window right next to the street like the prostitutes on Herbertstrasse. So ask, what you will get before you book.

The bar itself is quite popular among locals, so you won't find a lot of tourists here.

The biggest plus for the Kogge is its location. It sits right between the nightlife center around Reeperbahn and the harbour. Which also means that it's not a cosy neighbourhood but definitely the place to be. If you come on a weekend you'll have to visit the Fischmarkt, which is only a 2 minute walk away and opens at around 5:00h in the morning to offer you some delicious fish meals after a night out.

Room Tip: choose the showroom for a unique experience

I stayed at Kogge for two nights with my girlfriend, and we're definitely going to again!

Getting there:
The hotel has 3 S-train stations nearby, and is very easy to find from either of them.

Arrival:
When arriving at the hotel we had to wait a bit for service, but when it (he) finally came, we had a really nice and warm welcome. The chap behind the desk (the hotel bar) were really really friendly and helpful, and made us feel at home immediately. He offered us his own insiders pick on what to see, and told us to come see him if we had any questions. After that, he gave us the key and treated us with a free welcome shot of Jack D.

The facilities:
The hotel overall is quite worn, but actually in a really charming way - they call the place a rock'n'roll hotel, and that's exactly how it felt.
The rooms are all individually decorated, and we got the one called "disco dream". The room was decorated with old LP-covers on the walls and a vintage stereo cabinet serving as a shelf. It looked a bit like everything were about to fall apart, but the atmosphere was nice - it felt like staying in the spare room at your best punkrocker friend's place. It was worn (to put it mildly) but clean and cozy. The only thing missing, was a place to hang your coat and your wet towels - but in return you get free earplugs, to help you deal with the loud music from the bar.
The bathrooms and toilets are shared with the other guests, but since it's a small hotel it isn't a problem - still reasonably clean, and no queuing. The bathrooms are a bit dingy, but when entering the hotel for the first time, you already know that you shouldn't expect spa-treatments.
The bar is the reception as well, and it seemed like a nice place to hang out - nice music and (I think) lots of locals.
Breakfast is from 10-morning till 3 in the afternoon, but we didn't have that (or eat there at all). We checked out the menu though, and it had a nice selection of tex-mex dishes.
On my computers list of access-points, I could see that there is access. I didn't ask for passwords or prices, so I have no clue if they charge extra. It's available though.

Location:
As already said, it's really easy to find, and in close proximity to public transport. It is also located in the most buzzing and exiting part of the city - but still sort of retracted from it all. a 5 minute walk, you're in a melting pot of bars, music venues, clubs, hustlers and prostitutes. A 2 minute walk in the opposite direction, and you're at the river Elbe. The hotel is really perfectly located.

Overall:
Go there for a nice stay on the fringe, but stay out if you're prude. It's not high-class at all, but nice, cheap, perfectly located and with a cozy atmosphere.

Located quite close to the action in the Reeferbahn area, the hotel is ideally located for those who want to go out and experience the seedier side of Hamburg.

The price was quite reasonable and we were all provided with welcome shots in the hotel bar, which doubles as the reception area.

The hotel is NOT to be mistaken for a trendy 3 star ... as it is quite 'rustic' in nature - especially upon entering the hotel. However, the rooms were quite clean, though sparse. The bathroom is shared but due to the limited number of guests it was never overly crowded.

Parking can be an issue, but we were quite lucky to find free parking outside. The bar can be rather loud, but ear plugs are provided though none of us required them to sleep. The main problem was the fact that the heating system was not yet working - though we were fine as it was a pleasant evening in October, you wouldn't want to get too much farther into winter without the heat !

Overall, however, exactly what we expected.

It depends what you are looking for as to whether you will like Hotel Kogge. All the rooms are individually decorated, and as we booked the night before it was definitely the worst room as it was the last one left ( the punk one). I peeked at some of the other rooms and they looked great whereas ours was a bit dingy and there was nowhere to hang anything up. It was clean though, as were the communal showers and toilets. Terrible pillows!! The staff seemed helpful and friendly at first, but when we went in the bar in the evening found it to be quite cliquey, like we had crashed their private party. They all spoke excellent English though. if you are looking for somewhere cheap to stay that is in the heart of the reeperbahn then this place is great, and although the reeperbahn is the famous area for going out partying, we found we had more fun out in the more north westerly area of Hamburg. Overall if your looking for a private hotel room at hostel prices but don't want to actually stay in a hostel, this is a good bet!

  • Liked — Price
  • Disliked — Room - lack of hanging space and bad lighting, other rooms looked better though
  • Tips/Secrets — book early, all rooms are the same price but seem to be vastly different in quality
