This was the only true pub/ bar we found in close proximity to our hotel. We went every night for drinks and to hide from the cold temps. We became "friends" with the owner while we were there and she knew us when we went in. She helped me with my German while we were there. Although her English is perfect. We loved this place and look forward to going there. They were been even nice enough to make a vodka fizz for me when we came in. Which they all found very funny. Very relaxed atmosphere. Very inexpensive for cocktails. Amazingly nice staff. Very helpful with suggestions on what to do in hamburg. We still talk about this place. Great history with the Beatles when they were starting out make sure you see the piano (the bars name) that sits in the bar. They have by far the hardest working bar owner and bar staff we have ever met. Price where actually really cheap for a bar in a major city. Lots of fun and a great place to meet the locals.

I had the luck of having a personal guide to Hamburg in my partner who lived there for 20 years. She took me on our first evening there (after a long journey from Sweden by car). Oh what a relax, friendly, cosy bar it is. The decor is a bit kitchy with lots of Victorians prints and photos and the place owes its name to the upright piano that stands in the middle. They have a quite decent choice of beer (try the Duckstein which is excellent and not so easy to find at least in my experience) whiskeys and quite a lot of cocktails too. If I judge by the wiskey sour I had on our last evening there at the suggestion of the nice guy with steel rimmed glasses who, so he told me ,had worked there for ages, well they are excellent.
The good surprise with this place is that they also offer a range of 'toasts' or baguette very generously filled with all sorts of interesting combinations of delicious ingredients.
As for the patrons, as well as I could judge on our 4 late evenings there, it is a happy mixture of regulars playing cards, mature women in deep conversation in a one of the many little nooks, cute young ones enjoying the cocktails, and rather jolly group of young men. However the level of noise is not a problem and the music (sometimes live on the w.e. I am told) is just what is fitting such a place. There are a few tables outside weather permitting and the place is very centrally located. We had the pleasure to talk quite a bit with the charming owner and I spontaneously said I would write about her place. Thank you Beate
Oh! And something I absolutely want to mention. Once while we were there ,came a blind man and his handicapped wife (i think). They were very kindly helped towards their seats and the waiter even escored the gentleman to the toilet. Now these small attentions make you feel that humans are sometimes really good...
