We just came back from a weekend trip to Hamburg where we attended a wedding party. Since the celebration took place in Blankenese we decided to stay in a hotel nearby.
I cannot really complain about the hotel - the rooms are clean, the service is friendly. Its all normal.
But that somehow is part of the problem.
The great historical building is spoiled with unimaginative and partly downright ghastly interior design. I am not really sure if it really should be called design since dozens of different styles had been mixed. I very much had the feeling to be trapped in one of the shows in the late night television where they try to sell you these dolls.
The room was clean and fairly big. The website says there is a mini bar. Yes - there is a pantry kitchen with a fridge. But the fridge is empty and if you want some refreshments you will have to go to the reception. That is not my definition of a mini bar. While the pantry kitchen may have been a good thing - in the hotel rooms it is worthless because you cannot do anything with it. There is no tableware, there is no cutlery or a dish towel. There is not even a coffee maker that nowadays is standard in every Best Western. So all you are left with is the pantry kitchen that had been placed very unfortunate in plain view from your bed. It maybe just me - but I'd rather not have impression to sleep in my kitchen. To ruin the room completely the TV set had been mounted on a rack. It may just be me again - but to me this always feels cheap. Also it makes an awkward viewing position.
The breakfast could have been a great affair, with the terrace overlooking the Elbe river. But they managed to make it average by offering just the usual motel-like choice. I think a hotel of this price range should afford a decent coffee machine. Instead the coffee was supplied from a big thermos flask of the kind you find in your office. The jam and butter came in packed portions. How cheap!
I paid 145 Euro a night for a double room (facing the Elbe river). A room facing the park is 20 Euro less. Based on this we can say the view is worth around 20 Euro and that is fair. But 125 for the rest does not sound right to me.
So if you want a decent accomodation you probably stay much cheaper somewhere else and have the same standard. If you want something special - dont bother. Its not that special at all. If there is nowhere else to got - I will do.
