Stayed here in december with my wife and thoroughly loved it.Very convenient to find, we took the S 1 train from the airport at a cost of only 2.80 euros each changing at Ohlsdorf onto the U1 underground and getting off at Stephansplatz, from there it was only a short walk across the road to the hotel. We had a large comfortable room on the third floor with the bathroom area screened of by sliding doors with another pair of inner sliding glass sliding doors protecting the modesty of shower and toilet users.Initially the rooom was cold as we had not noticed the radiators were off with that rectified the rooms was very warm. The room came complete with mini bar but no tea and coffee facilities .There was also a free safe. For those tourists who can not live without tv there was satellite tv with a multitude of foreign channels including itv and bbc.Interestingly the itv channel was easterly based with local news stories about Cambridge.

Breakfasts were very good, though as other correspondents (who evidently have a different hot breakfast every day at home) have noted the hot food was always scrambled egg, bacon and boiled eggs however one can not complain when there is such a vast array of fruits, yoghurts, cereals, cooked meats, cheeses and pates together with a good selection of breads and pastries.

The hotel is ideally placed for a short walk into the centre where one can visit the lakeside christmas market and the one next to the Rathaus. Also the STADRUNDFAHRT double decker bus city tour can be boarded immediately outside the hotel though if you do that you will find yourself waiting at the train station for half an hour for it to resume.

Another great way to see the city is on the free walking tour which sets off from Starbucks opposite the town hall.On this tour you obviosly discover things you would only know with the most detailed guide book.We were kept fully entertained by our English guide Kim who it turned out was a singer songwriter plying her trade in Hamburg looking for that break that happened to the Beatles. All in all avery good hotel to choose

Room Tip: Try for a room on the highest floors with a view of the Lake

Stayed one night only. Was pleased to get a warm welcome after a long and trying day of cancelled and delayed flights. Easy check in after arriving at 11.30pm with a recommendation for a couple of close by restaurant/bars. The Alster Hof's own bar is not open on Mondays.
Very close, about 5 minutes walk, to the Alster See so location is very central to Hamburg.
Rooms are comfortable but reasonably basic. Hotel has a fitness room with a few machines, all of which seemed in good condition.
For me the hotel was comfortable and represented good value.

The best thing about this hotel is definitely its location. There's a subway station around the corner and the Rathaus is 10 minutes away by foot. My room was small but clean. Esplanade can be a busy street, so it can get noisy with the traffic and sirens. The hotel is next to a Hofbrau pub, with people drinking and smoking outside, but that wasn't an issue. The breakfast buffet was good. The main downside is that wireless internet is not free. A 10-hour Telekom card costs 25 eur. If you get one, be sure to sign out every time you're done (closing your browser is not enough), or else you'll use up all your airtime in, well, 10 straight hours.

Overall, not a bad hotel, but nothing overly impressive either. It's a good starting point to explore the city.

Fourth time staying here - U-bahn 2 minutes away, restaurants and shops round corner on pedestrianised Collonade.Alster's a few minutes walk. Rooms are fine and comfortable. Good variety for the buffet breakfast with attentive staff to ensure you have coffee soon after entry to the restaurant(only serves breakfast). Cosy little bar run by Dieter - friendly guy.
Worth booking well in advance as hotel always seems busy.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms overlook a sort of courtyard but dont really have a view. Rooms at front get some traffi...

We stayed at Alster-Hof for a few nights. We flew to Hamburg and then used public transportation to the hotel, S-Bahn one stop and then 8 stops with U-Bahn. Once we stepped out of the underground it was only a walk of about two minutes to the hotel. We arrived before lunch-time and our room was already ready then, so we could get the key adn put our luggage in the room. The staff at the hotel was overall very friendly. The breakfast buffet was very good, fresh food and a good variety. We had booked a family room adn it was spacious, a double bed and a bedding couch. The beds were slightly hard and the pillows were a bit hard to get comfortable, but that was the only thing. Our room was facing the backyard, so it was quiet at night and we heard absolutely nothing from other rooms or the corridor outside. The location of the hotel is great. Just a very short walk and you've reached the bridge dividing Binnenalster and Aussenalster. Next to Binnenalster there is a nice walkway, Neuer Jungfernstieg, which leads to the shopping area and along the water.
When leaving the hotel, we could store our luggage in a locked storage room and we got tickets for each piece of baggage.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

For the price and location, you cannot go wrong. All other reviews about this hotel are accurate! My only complaint is that we went on a hot day and stayed in a room on the fifth floor that looked in on the hotel courtyard, which was surrounded by buildings on all 4 sides; this prevented the cool breeze from entering our room, which made it uncomfortably hot and humid. I suggest an outward facing room if you are staying during the summer. Also, for a hotel, the sheets could have been a little softer. They were a little stiff.

The Hotel staff is great and the nearby is the best shopping in the city. I absolutely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms do not have A/C, make sure to get a room that doesn't face the inside of the building.

The hotel is really located centrally. Walking distance from the CCH (conference centre), U Bahn & S Bahn stations. Good restaurants nearby, and very close to the shopping scene in Hamburg.
Hotel staff is friendly & helpful.Good breakfast served every morning.
Place is ideal for delegates attending conferences/trade fairs at CCH.

Room Tip: Ask for street facing rooms, as the one I stayed in, had no view of the street and quite boring.
