I stayed at the Baseler Hof for 2 nights on a business trip, and stayed one further night in a private capacity to see a bit of the city. The hotel is very clean and decently appointed – I don’t recognise some of the earlier descriptions below so I’m assuming it’s had a facelift recently. The internet policy has also changed, as I had unlimited WiFi as well as the PC in the lobby (complete with printer, which allowed me to print out boarding passes for my flight home). The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the little touch of remembering your name after you’ve checked in makes it feel more warm and welcoming than the at times austere coldness of international chains.

My double room was spacious and very clean, and although it did face the front I have to confess I had no problem with street noise as others have complained of, but I may not be as light a sleeper! There was also good selection at breakfast (one thing I did note was that breakfast ran till 1100, for those who like a nice lie in!)

Location wise it’s ideal, just off the Alster and within 10 minutes’ walk of the old town. The transport hubs of Dammtor and Hauptbanhof (and the city bus terminal) are within walking distance, and Jungfernstieg U-bahn/S-bahn station is very close by with direct link to the airport with the S1 line. The hotel does also give you a pass for the public transport system that is valid on all S-bahn, U-bahn, bus AND Hadag ferry services within Hamburg – including the S1 back to the airport, so it’s very handy indeed. (If you are here as a tourist, or even on business and have time, take the 62 Ferry down the Elbe rather than a harbour tour!). Out of the hotel front door and a hundred yards or so to the left is a pedestrian street that has some very nice restaurants around.

Another nice little touch was the little map in the room highlighting some good running routes from the hotel.

All in all, I found it very pleasant and wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again on any return visit.

I have been positevely surprised by the hotel. People very kind and attentive, great position, good relationship price/quality. The service was excellent for my stay together with an exhibition, which normally brings price up for hotel stay. I saw reviews saying room was old. They are a bit updated, but perfectly mantained. Tv is old and if you go in Hotel to look Tv is not your place. Instead, it's quite and very near to exhbition centre. A great breakfast, an umbrella in the room and free WIFI + free bus card to go around Hamburg made a fantastic service. So I am very happy of the choice and I will definitely go back.

This hotel is very reasonably priced and has a warm friendly atmosphere. The rooms in the back of the hotel are quiet and the cleaning staff similarly quiet and friendly in the mornings. The breakfast is good and the hotel is clean. The hotel is also conveniently located with a variety of restaurants close by. For the price this is a real buy for a large busy city.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room, ask for one off the Esplanade toward the back of the hotel.

I came to a 3 day convention in Hamburg. The hotel is located 5 min walk from the conference center and from the center of the city. The hotel is clean, nice room ( a bit small) and the service was very good.

The Baseler Hof is a four star independently owned hotel at the rim of downtown Hamburg, very conveniently located close to Hamburg Dammtor station. It is just a five minute walk to Jungfernstieg. The rooms are not too big but ok for the price. A ticket for the public transportation system is included for free in the room rate, breakfast is nice. A good value priced choice in Hamburg.

We ask five things from a hotel: location, cleanliness, decent service, quiet, and internet access (preferably good wifi). This hotel does well on the first 3 but not as good on the last two. It’s in a good location, right near a pedestrian street with lots of cafes, wine bars, restaurants, and near major shopping. Rooms were clean and well equipped, and the reception friendly and helpful. Good plentiful breakfast. We anticipated this being a 4 stars out of 5 (we only give 5 to superb hotels). By the time we left, however, it was downgraded to a 3. We were at the back of the hotel on a higher floor above a small street, not even the main street at the front. Nonetheless about 5:30am it became somewhat noisy with truck traffic and by 7am nearby construction work. Not completely the fault of the hotel, as it is in the middle of a city after all, but doesn’t make for a good night’s sleep. Might have been better if we were in a room facing the central courtyard of the hotel.

But the major problem with this hotel is their silly internet policy. You are given only a miniscule amount of free time before you are suddenly kicked off and have to purchase more. I think we each had only 20 minutes to download and answer emails. I receive many emails per day and my wife is on facebook and we both check the news. There was hardly enough time to even answer all our emails and it was very irritating to be sidetracked in the midst of answering emails or reading an online newspaper. Good hotel managements recognize that free internet access today is like providing hot water and electricity to their clientele and provide it free (even if for economic reasons they have to charge every guest whether they use the internet or not 2 euros or $ more per day in the room price to provide it free for those who need it), and gain a competitive advantage by doing so; poor hotel managements (more prevalent in the better hotels in the U.S. unfortunately) tries to squeeze every last cent out of their guests by charging for internet but if you know this when you book you can at least avoid choosing that hotel if you want to. But the silliest hotel managements are ones like these—for some reason in our experience more prevalent in some German hotel chains—who try to have it both ways by giving you just a little so they can say they provide free internet, but then charge you after a very short period of time or limited number of megabytes, thereby succeeding only in irritating and angering their guests. The most frustrating aspect of the whole experience was going down the next morning and when we asked being given another small increment for free but finding out that unlimited access per day would have only cost us 2 Euros!!! For this small amount of money they put their guests through great inconvenience.

This could be a very good hotel if they changed their internet policies.

Room Tip: Book a room on the inner courtyard not on a street. Don't use internet or buy unlimited for 2 E...

I was visiting the university, and chose the hotel for its excellent
location and reasonable price. The staff of the hotel are very courteous.
The room, although small, is quite comfortable. The only complaints
that I have are the limitation and snail speed on the wifi (200MB a day),
and that I was waken up at night several times by my neighbor during
my stay.

But all in all, it was a pleasant stay and I will choose it if I ever visit Hamburg again.
