We arrived in Hamburg early in the morning of Sunday 12 May 2013 for a two night stay. We got there in style, on Cunard's Queen Mary 2 from New York. Our arrival date was the last day of the world famous Harbour Festival and our ship was part of that.
The hotel in Alster is excellent. We had a great room 609 on the sixth floor. I was content to overlook the small area of carpet that was threadbare. Apart from that, comfy beds, nice linens, huge bathroom with everything you need. This hotel is sparkling clean (it is in Germany after all!), with a tremendous level of "can do" friendly service from the staff. The reception desk were more than happy to explain the slight complexities of the fare structure on the U-bahn, and their good advice probably saved us €100 in taxi rides we did not take) All staff we encountered spoke very good English.
There is a pub / bar (The King George Pub --- the House of Hannover ruled the British throne for almost a century and a half). This is where you will eat in the evening if you haven't got the energy to go into the city. The food is excellent, freshly prepared with good ingredients; choice is limited, but nevertheless we enjoyed lovely steak and wonderful fish. Prices are in line with Hamburg, and they are not expensive in relative terms. Breakfast is served on the first floor in the Blue Marlin restaurant (which is not open for dinner ...). I think this is one of the best buffet breakfasts I have ever encountered in Europe, and far ahead of anything you'll get in the south of England. Everything you could wish for at breakfast is here; for example, five choices of juice, exquisite teas (Hamburg is the best place in Europe for leaf tea), cold meats, Dutch and German cheese, many kinds of bread, eggs cooked to order ....
The cost of a taxi from the airport to the hotel is about €30 including a generous tip. You will ride in a large Mercedes with a driver who speaks English. The transit time will be 30 minutes or less unless you are in the peak of the rush hour. If €30 is two much it is €2 for a ticket on the U-bahn which will get you to the hotel is well under an hour with one change --- this is not recommended if you have more than one large suitcase (steps everywhere)
The hotel is in an upscale residential area, very quiet and completely safe. The outer lake is just across the road. It's really quiet and relaxing here. If it is not raining it take less than 30 minutes to stroll along the lake side to the city centre -- it took us 20 minutes place the wait time at traffic lights to get from the hotel to the Rathaus.
