“Good location, shame about the place”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

The hotel is centrally located right next to Hamburg Central Train Station and Hamburg Central Bus Station, so, the location is both its strength and its downfall. It is an ideal base for travelling on public transport around Hamburg and further afield, but it is noisy - one morning we were woken by a bagpipe busker playing under our window. A 5-minute walk will take you to the 'posh end of town' - Mönckebergstraße, with it's high-end shops and boutiques. Hamburg centre and its neo-Gothic Rathaus are just 15 to 20 minutes walk away. The area around the hotel is convenient not only because of access to public transport, but also because it is populated with numerous Turkish shops and kebab places, which means you can have a drink and buy food when most of the rest of the city is closed. It is a short journey on the underground to the city's most famous quarter - St. Pauli.

The hotel is an old building, so the rooms have fabulously high ceilings and a grand staircase, although the interior would benefit from an upgrade. The view from our room was good, considering the location, and we had a great view of the Hamburg Art and Design Museum. The hotel is clean and the receptionists were helpful, albeit somewhat dour. The breakfast wasn't bad, with a limited range of hot and cold foods served as a buffet. The dining room is used for breakfast only. The room was clean and large, the beds were firm and comfortable, although the bathroom was rather small. The hotel offered very reasonable rates, which is a reflection of its location rather than the hotel itself.

If you're not looking for luxury, but want a convenient location and good transport links, you will be hard pressed to find anywhere better!

When we arrived in hamburg it was raining so we were very happy when we only had to walk across the road from the main station. and were at The hotel checkin and checkout were both fast and efficient the room was on the 3rd floor facing the street it was very quiet clean and had great character breakfast was excellent and the staff there very good.
No free wifi was the only negative here.

Centrally located, near the Hauptbahnhof, this hotel put up to our standard.
Though the Steindamm itself is not a place to frequend with a family with young kids, redlight-districtlike, it is near to St-Georg, which has a lot of nice places to eat and is a upcoming place for design and art-lovers.It's near the Alster as well.
The view from our room-balcony,at the front of the hotel was tremendous, especially in the evening. Alas no fridge avallable for a nice cold drink, but the luxurios bathroom made up for it.
Nice breakfast in a relaxed atmosphere the next day gives way to another booking next time we visit Hamburg.
We just stayed for one night, but there was a leftluggage-possibilty at the reception, so we had plenty of time for a stroll after checking out.

Room Tip: The double glasing will keep the citynoise away, though during the summer it might get hot at the fr...

Pretty typical 3 star experience. Avoid rooms on the front of the hotel as they not only get the direct sunshine (and no A/C of course) but the neighborhood is VERY busy 24/7 and VERY noisy. A standard room is pretty much a closet so if you're expecting name brand chain amenities, this place isn't it. Other reviews commented about the stairs up to reception and lack of bellhops, again pretty common in older European hotels so if you can't haul your own baggage stay at the 4 star chain hotels.

This was the first hotel we stayed in during our 3 week European adventure. We booked our room (a Comfort Triple Room) 4 months in advance. The description of the hotel location and pictures on their website were absolutely false for what we experienced. The hotel was located in an area where sex shops abounded, the parking facility was several blocks away requiring you to walk through what was a seedy area. Please see the photos I posted as a comparison (what we booked, and what we got). Very uncomfortable beds, none of us slept, tiny cramped room. We would never stay here again. I must say however, that the buffet breakfast was very nice - lots of varied choices available and really delicious coffee.

Room Tip: Definitely ask to see your room before checking in - although we would not have been able to cancel...

Visited here with a group of 14 friends. This hotel does the job. Good city center location across the road from the central train station.

The staff are friendly the rooms are clean, the bathrooms are decent. Didnt have any breakfast here though so cant comment on that.

Room Tip: If you are travelling over for the nightlife of the Reeperbahn its a bit of a journey in a taxi abou...

Stayed here July 10 to 14 July. Booked a small queen room, then had regrets and tried to change to Comfort Room with sofa. But none were available. Only needed a place to crash as was attending an social event in Hamburg. It is my 4th year and time booking a hotel near the main line, as really like the local and walk to Europa Passage and beyond.

Anyway, enough of my boring blah, blah, I was not phased with the location being in the red light district, but do wish the working girls were a lot better looking. My room was small as advertised, but and compact. Didn't like the location of the tv to the bed, however it did have a swivel option. Bathroom wash basin tap was badly designed, protruding annoyingly and impossible to shave or wash without spillage.

Reception staff were very helpful.

Good tip - Always ask for a quiet room when checking in to any hotel. The receptionist know the quiet rooms. Otherwise, you may get a room facing the street or in between 2 rooms.

Room Tip: Rooms not facing street more quiet.
