“Good value for money. Spotlessly clean. 5 mins from Central Station”
Reviewed May 8, 2012

This hotel has been recently renovated and everything is high quality and new. Good linen and towels. Gets noise from the railway line but you soon accustom yourself to it. The room I had was small. The surrounding district is a bit rough but after a few minutes you are in nice areas.

I did not dine in. There are good restaurants in nearby Hansaplatz - try Doria.

Room Tip: My guess is that a higher floor would get less train noise.

This is a very good choice for a visitor to Hamburg -- very satisfactory rooms, well located, and reasonably priced. It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof (use the SE exit of the huge station). The room I had was decorated in a solid modern style. Very clean and well maintained. Free internet. Staff very helpful. Mini-bar prices very reasonable (which is seldom the case). I didn't try breakfast, but it looked good from a distance. The immediate neighborhood is a bit seedy, but seemed safe enough and a ten-minute walk gets you to Lange Reihe, which is very much gentrified and lined with interesting small restaurants with many different cuisines from traditional German to Portugese.

Good hotel near Hamburg Central Station, good value for money. Easy to get around and go to main touristic places walking or taking metro. Just be aware, as all central stations zones, you need to be alert when walking from station to the hotel as the streets are full of people and some homeless. In general very safe surrondings.

We got this at the very last minute, as the hotel our friends were staying in was fully booked. We got a 4* secret hotel on Lastminute. I was a little suprised to see a best western come back!

Overall, it was pleasant, good for the price that it was and the staff were helpful. It is not, however 4* (not even by european standards!).

The location is close to the station and easy to walk just about everywhere, though we got taxis to Reeperbahn (which I'm positive I've spelt wrong!). Neighbourhood was slightly dodgy, but nothing to be concerned about. Same as any hotel that's close to a main station.

Beds were very comfortable, rooms were a decent size, bathroom had an actual bathtub.

Overall, not bad for a weekend, for 1000dkk (about 200USD).

The Best Western Plus Hotel St. Raphael is a very nice hotel with a professional staff who seem to take their jobs seriously. The hotel is very clean and nicely appointed. The front desk service was efficient and friendly. They even asked us which language we preferred---which we appreciated since we both speak German and were looking forward to using it while on vacation. (We have found that in Germany, the locals will more often than not prefer to use their English, especially once they realize that you are an American). They never attempted to speak to us in English at the Best Western in Hamburg once we confirmed our preference to use the German language. It was a nice change of pace. I would give the service at this hotel an A+. Everything was handled with total professionalism. While the hotel is within easy walking distance of the train station and numerous restaurants, one evening we chose to stay in and actually dine at the hotel. We were very pleasantly surprised. Again, the service was impeccable and the food delicious. I enjoyed a salmon tar-tar and a bowl of French onion soup with bread. I even ordered an American cocktail (a Manhattan, up) and they took the order and made the drink as if it were something they do everyday. I only mention this because I've ordered Manhattans in many places around the world, and few bartenders know what they are. The hotel is cosmopolitan as is the neighborhood. I would definitely stay here again!

After having a disastrous start in Hamburg with the Holiday Inn Express St Pauli-Messe we booked this hotel online 5 minutes before checking in. The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly and spoke English well, the room was a good size and the place was good value for money. There were a few little touches we found that made it a great stay including leaving little packets of gummy bears on our pillows and having an area to sit in the foyer where you could use the internet for free. The area in the foyer had dishes of chocolate and candy you could help yourself to while using the free internet and they also provided a computer you could use for internet access.
A few people have mentioned they felt a bit unsafe in the area around the hotel. There was one block which felt a tiny bit unsafe but there were always lots of people around and both the hotel and the tourist information office said that it was fine. You just needed to be a bit streetwise and make sure you chose to walk along the main road to get to the station.
Overall I would recommend this hotel as it was close to both the bus and the train station (about 5 minutes walk) and there were quite a lot of places to eat nearby. It was also only about a 10 minute walk into the city. It was good value as well as being comfortable and clean.

Room Tip: As with all of Germany, make sure you mention non smoking if you need to be in a non smoking room. W...

I stayed at the Best Western St Raphael whilst visiting Hamburg with my mother. It is in the central district of St Georg only a few hundred meters from the central train station. It is actually slightly closer to the Beim Strohmhaus entrance of Berliner Tor U/S bahn station. I used to live in St Georg so I am fully aware of its reputation but the location of the hotel means you do not need to see the worst parts of the district. I wouldn't have taken my mother there if I didn't think it was safe!

+ Clean, well presented rooms
+ Central location
+ Friendly, helpful staff
+ Excellent public transport links only a short walk away

- Next to main road so can be a bit noisy
- St Georg isn't the nicest district in Hamburg
- Not many nice bars/restaurants within walking distance

Dear Andyollings,
Thank you for your review. It is nice to read that you and your mother liked your stay at our hotel.
Yes St. Georg is a very multicultural quarter of Hamburg with a lot of nice corners. Just a tip for your next visit, try one of the various nice and good restaurants and bars at Lange Reihe, just a short walk from the hotel.
With BEST regards
