“A calming experience”
Reviewed December 6, 2013

My wife and I visited Hamburg in May 2013. Our hotel room overlooked the Aussenalster. It was so peaceful and calm especially of an evening. Of a day time many locals like to use the lake for sailing - a very pleasant way to pass the time. Also take the opportunity to drive around the streets along the shores of the lake - there are some beautiful homes and gardens and also a number of Embassies.

“Great place for a walk”

Very relaxing place to take a walk or jog. Right next to the convention center. Don't miss the chance to drink a cup of green tea in the japanese pavilion

“A lovely lake with plenty to do, just minutes from the city centre”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

This lake is perfect for anyone who wants to sit and enjoy the view, walk, cycle or run.
It is surrounded by trees - with some park land on one side and quiet streets on the other.
For those running, there is a cinder/gravel track most of the way round, making this a great off-road 7k run.
For those cycling there is a dedicated cycle way.
For those walking, pushing prams and wanting to take their time, there is a pathway with numerous benches and viewpoints for a packed lunch or break, as well as swans and ducks to feed! The pathway is flat and suitable for prams/wheelchairs.

There are cafes and restaurants dotted around the lake, as well as ice cream/snack points for refreshments.

On the water there are kayaks and small yachts for hire and boat trips to enjoy - including a steamboat.

A great spot to sit and watch the world go by in the sunshine - a world away from the city (which you can see in the distance, from the head of the lake).
Also a great place to be active and keep fit.
Just a 10 minute walk from Jungfernsteig and the Rathaus, this is definitely worth a visit.

“Sailing, Sailing”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The Aussen Alster See is a manmade lake, which is sort of rectangular and was made by widening a river. It's a large enough lake to sail on, and we saw many boats out on the lake everyday.

You can take lessons in sailing or get a taste of sailing-an hour with an expert sailing around the Harbor (two people for 65 euro)
and well worth it. It is such a happy thing to do. There are beautiful homes around the lake, and restaurants, a sailing club, and a sculling club. The day we sailed there was a small regatta going on with the sailboats and a scull race as well. There is something just so happy about all those white sails out on the water with the wind and other sailboats going by. All around the lake is a path for joggers and walkers and a path for bicycles.
You can tell which is which by the color, but i kept straying into the bicycle path at first, until I got used to it.

You always saw people out and about both on and around the lake. It was beautiful to see at each part of the day as the sunlight plays with the colors of the lake and the sky.

We stayed at the Atlantic Kempenski, first class hotel, just across from the lake and that was an old world experience in itself. They help you with making sailboat reservations, getting your hair cut, loaning you umbrellas if it's raining--all discreet and thorough service. It's expensive, but we got the hotel through Hotels.com and got a really good deal on it. Definitely go to Hamburg and stayin the downtown area somewhere near the Aussen or the the Innen Alster. You can walk everywhere and there is something about the water in the middle of the city that gives it a special
je ne sais quai.
