This museum actually includes two separate museums – the Museum im Roselius-Haus and the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum. They are both in Böttcherstrasse (very close to each other) but they are quite different.

The Roselius-Haus is a 16th-century house with a wonderful atmosphere of antiquity: It is packed with ancient furniture, carpets etc. and hung with ancient paintings. One of the rooms on the ground floor has about ten paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, including the Portrait of Martin Luther! As you walk up the spiral wooden staircase, you really feel like going back in time.

The Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum is a much later building (dating as it seems from the early 20th century), commissioned by Ludwig Roselius, the art collector who owned the Roselius House in the late 19th-early 20th c., but it is very well integrated with the surrounding architecture. It also has a spiral staircase inside, this time designed in the style of expressionism, and it is absolutely fantastic. The building was specially meant to house the impressive collection of Paula Modersohn-Becker’s paintings – her famous Self-portrait is definitely a gem.

If you get to Böttcherstrasse (and it is a must-go in Bremen), do leave some time to visit these two charming museums. Whichever of them you visit first, the entrance ticket that you buy is valid for the two museums, and it is only 3 euros for both! Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed to take pictures inside, but you can buy postcards and booklets in the museum giftshops.
The museum staff are very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my visit there immensely.
