Description: Napoleon is believed to have once dined at this restaurant, which opened in 1621. In 1621, a retired knight’s servant of the elector of that time opened a little distillery, and by this he laid the foundations for “Letzte Instanz”. Thanks to the “Graues Kloster” (Grey Monastery), in Waisenstraße, belonging to Nikolaikirche, the distillery was getting more and more popular even beyond the borderlines of the city. The monastery, working place of doctors, alchemists, and astrologists, and which also had a printing work and a foundry of letters, enhanced the popularity of Waisenstraße and attracted a large number of guests coming to our restaurant.

“Best Dinner in Berlin”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2014

I tried the German Meatball, served with pan fried potatoes and fresh garden vegetables. This is on of the best meals I had while in Berlin. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had walked by in the afternoon and made a reservation for that evenings dinner with no problem. However, I would highly recommend making a reservation, as they fill up very quickly! Service was good. They were very busy, but all 3 waiters were highly attentive to ALL tables.

“Authentic German Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2014

We tried their pork knuckle, it was excellent! We felt like we were the only non-Germans in the restaurant. The waiters were not very fluid in English-but we were in Germany after all so not a problem. I would recommend.

“History and food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014

It's hard to find a place on Saturday night in Berlin and just a few locals allow to book in the morning for the evening: the kindness of the stuff has been immediately confermed from first telephone contact. The dinner, in the local that hosted also Napoleone, was absolutly up to the tradition. The dishes were very appreciated by two lovers of berlin food. lso th price was absolutly reasonablel.

“Great food, booking essential!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2014

Great place to get traditional German food and beer. We happened to be passing earlier in the week and booked a table for the Friday night but witnessed a LOT of other people being turned away as they had not booked in advance. Service was efficient if not overly friendly. Small menu means they can produce your food really quickly and it was very tasty. More pricey than other places but you're paying for the history and atmosphere as much as anything else.
