Description: Napoleon is believed to have once dined at this restaurant, which opened in 1621. In 1621, a retired knight’s servant of the elector of that time opened a little distillery, and by this he laid the foundations for “Letzte Instanz”. Thanks to the “Graues Kloster” (Grey Monastery), in Waisenstraße, belonging to Nikolaikirche, the distillery was getting more and more popular even beyond the borderlines of the city. The monastery, working place of doctors, alchemists, and astrologists, and which also had a printing work and a foundry of letters, enhanced the popularity of Waisenstraße and attracted a large number of guests coming to our restaurant.

“Like stepping back in time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014 via mobile

Lovely pub situated just outside alexanderplatz. Was a bit hesitant to walk up the dark, poorly lit street leading up to it though!
The service is alright, they do the job but nothing out of the ordinary. The place was lovely, homely (the inside is worth a look regardless) and although we didn't eat there, the food looked great.
Best thing about the place is the beer. I'd recommend the black beer :)

“Last minute find, great old German pub grub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2014

We visited this restaurant by chance, our first choice being fully booked we found this on Tripadvisor and decided to give it a try. It was quite difficult to find, off the main street. We were lucky to get a table without booking and were squeezed in upstairs in the corner. This was perfect for us as we had a good view of the restaurant. The decor was charming and we discovered the history of the place, that it was the oldest pub in Berlin! The beer was very good and portions were large. We both had the pork knuckle which was just what we needed, authentic hearty German food.

“Authentic German cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2014

Berlin's oldest restaurant with amazing, authentic German food. Try the pork knuckle (Eisbein - cooked, Grillhaxe - grilled) with potato dumplings or the meatballs. Staff is very friendly if you speak German. You will manage with English as well. One of my favourite restaurants in Berlin.

“Big Group Trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

I went with a group of 50+ people and it was great. We had beautiful steak in wine sauce and tons of side dishes. There was more than enough food for all of us. We all sat in small groups at the tables, and we were served family style with our meat plated up, and all the side dishes in large bowls. It was a little dark in there, and kind of cramped, but that was part of the charm of it. I really liked it.

“decent food and old-style charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014

We visited here for dinner during our recent trip to Berlin. We'd read reviews on the place, and it was just as expected: a menu of traditional German dishes with a solid set of beer and wine choices, all set in an historic building. The place isn't fancy in a haute cuisine sense, but it does have it's own nice charm. The service was friendly and generally prompt. The main dishes were all enjoyable. The crackling ham hock was especially good, and we also liked the baked-to-order apple dessert. I would definitely consider coming back on a future trip. By the way, if you're worried about a crowd you can make reservations online, too; they will confirm by email.
