Description: Napoleon is believed to have once dined at this restaurant, which opened in 1621. In 1621, a retired knight’s servant of the elector of that time opened a little distillery, and by this he laid the foundations for “Letzte Instanz”. Thanks to the “Graues Kloster” (Grey Monastery), in Waisenstraße, belonging to Nikolaikirche, the distillery was getting more and more popular even beyond the borderlines of the city. The monastery, working place of doctors, alchemists, and astrologists, and which also had a printing work and a foundry of letters, enhanced the popularity of Waisenstraße and attracted a large number of guests coming to our restaurant.

The restaurant was almost full when we arrived but they found us a table at the back which was fine - great atmosphere.
The food, typically German, was excellent. The very pretty waitress was really welcoming and very helpful.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant. It's also possible to eat outside, but suggest you make a reservation.

Suprisingly hard to find a good restaurant serving German food in this part of Berlin. We didn't book and were fortunate to get a table for two under the trees in the small fenced garden in a this quite area, not far from the Alexander Platz. Most tables taken and we had a good choice from the menu and specials. The menu was all in German but our waiter helped us through it. Food and service were excellent and the price quite acceptable. Important to note that cash is king in Berlin and we were unable to use our cards to pay the bill.

Oldest restaurant in Berlin with a wonderful ambiance, excellent traditional German dishes, good beer and wine. The best meal we had in a week in Berlin. We would go there again.

If you are to traditional German food in Berlin, this is the place to go. Lovely garden and cellar. Good value for money (what the Germans call "Preisleistungsverhältnis" :-)
