Description: Napoleon is believed to have once dined at this restaurant, which opened in 1621. In 1621, a retired knight’s servant of the elector of that time opened a little distillery, and by this he laid the foundations for “Letzte Instanz”. Thanks to the “Graues Kloster” (Grey Monastery), in Waisenstraße, belonging to Nikolaikirche, the distillery was getting more and more popular even beyond the borderlines of the city. The monastery, working place of doctors, alchemists, and astrologists, and which also had a printing work and a foundry of letters, enhanced the popularity of Waisenstraße and attracted a large number of guests coming to our restaurant.

We did not order upfront but managed to get a table. The restaurant was a bit hard to find. It is located on the road behind the huge Alexa mall (with Media market and Starbucks)

The place was crowded. The fish dish and lamb was good. Bit on the small side, but the we are no great eaters. You can order a larger fish dish. Advice on white wine was good.

You better order upfront to find a good place. The food was good and I enjoyed it.

Terrible service the worst we had in 6 nights of dining out in Berlin. They ignore you from the minute you arrive until you leave .... Food was pretty average ... But service was just so appauling and full of loads of tourists like ourselves! Biggest mistake was to waste an evening there ... mcDonalds would have been better .....

My wife and I came here on our honeymoon, and before I say anything else, let me say this: Make a reservation!! We arrived about 7pm on a weeknight expecting a few available tables, or a medium-to-long wait for a table to open up. The bartender told us that the whole place was booked solid til closing, but that we were welcome to sit in the beer garden. Normally this would not be a problem, but it started to rain on us in the middle of our meal. Learn from our mistake!

Once we were seated and the food arrived, we were happy we came despite the rain. I had a cabbage roll which ended up being way more food than I could eat in a sitting, especially with the beer I got. The food was very good, but the service was somewhat lacking. "German food, French service," as my wife said. When it's raining and you're sitting outside, you don't want to wait 20 minutes for a beer or the check to arrive. It's good for a relaxing dinner for a couple, but I wouldn't recommend it for families with small kids or people dining alone.

This place was found by chance on 5 January.

Staff were a little abrupt and cold, but we noticed it was only with tourists.

Food was fresh and plentiful. Vegetables were varied with each dish and fresh.

With no entree, we ate our main meal but too full to order dessert.

We didn't have a booking and were accommodated with others on a long table.

We sat and talked after our meal with no pressure to leave.

Very comfortable and warm.

We would go back because of the food, not service.
