We were at Cassambalis a few months ago, and liked it a lot. Recently we went there again for an impromptu dinner during IFA (a huge Berlin consumer electronics show) when finding an available table is usually impossible. Not surprisingly, there were no tables available, however the waiter "squeezed" us in at the bar, where we also had dinner.
The restaurant was super busy, but despite that, the service was attentive and friendly. We got to know the two young bartenders and observed their hard work, while drinking Hugos (a prosecco based drink with mint - similar to Mojito). We were sitting right across from them and with a commanding view of the main dining room, felt bit as though we were participants in a reality show.
The décor was interesting - every square meter of wall space was used to display a considerable collection of original art. Beautiful floral arrangements helped to create a special atmosphere.
We ordered grilled octopus to share, and Loup de Mer (medium size), with vegetables. Simply put the food was of outstanding quality and taste. It has been a long time since I had octopus as tender and tasty, outside of Melide (Spain).
The Loup (Mediterranean sea bass) was tender and done to perfection (whole fish), then filleted quickly in front of us and served without delay sprinkled with fresh pepper and ground rock salt. The herbs used, complimented and unlocked the full potential of that delicate fish. For desert we had home made ice cream.
It takes a lot to prepare AND SERVE a memorable meal and we got to have a front row seat to the workings of this excellent restaurant. It is not just the fresh ingredients, not just the physical appearance, but also teamwork, and commitment of the staff to produce the best experience for the guest every time. One has to love their work to maintain this high standard of service every day, even if it becomes a bit of a routine, because for the guest this visit may be the first, and will form the basis for their memory of the evening. So there is little room for error here. If a guest has a bad experience, you cant say: "well, but most of the time we do well".. We had fun being a of the this event...
We had a great evening and loved the food in one of the best restaurants we visited in Berlin, ever!
