Description: Aigner restaurant in the heart of Mitte Berlin enjoys views of the charming Gendarmenmarkt from its terrace and vistas of the French and German cathedrals. Aigner has furnishings rescued from the legendary Café Aigner in Vienna, from the billiard table to the modernist Thonet furniture, wine bins along the walls and mirrored ceiling, giving an air of elegant restraint. Private groups may make use of the billiard room. This is a fine restaurant and watering-hole for Berlin’s high-fliers – like former Chancellor Schröder -- though award-winning chef-owner Herbert Beltle cares little for that moniker. Instead, he concentrates on using the freshest ingredients to create excellent regional Austrian and south German cuisine alongside newer, lighter inventions. Signature dish is Tafelspitz, served in a brass kettle with haunch and shoulder of beef, veg, savoy cabbage, crème fraiche and apple-flavoured horseradish. Other dishes include ice cream of potato-leek soup with fried scallops, pink-fried calf’s kidneys in mustard sauce with potatoes, and Tete de Moine with fig mustard. Strong wine list. A few steps from the Schauspielhaus theatre.

excellent food....even for vegetarians like me (I 've never eaten lentils as there), my friend got a niece piece of meat
excellent wine...Merlot 2009 (Horcher gold)....they make their own wine, really German wine is nice...also new for me, it really is a good red wine!!!....takeaway/bottle Merlot 2009 is €29, we paid about €58 for the bottle on the table
very friendly staff
it was very busy there, we had no reservation, and they made it possible to find a table for us
I love the bustle there
We come back!!!!!

According to the friendly staff in the restaurant the head chef is a prima-donna and can't accept any critique. We could have eaten better for less at other restaurants in Berlin. Aigner is overrated. Not again.

We ate dinner at Aigner Restaurant on Französische Strasse near the Gendarmenmarkt in early December because it is a pleasant walk from the Hotel Adlon and because we were looking for some of our favorite German dishes. Aigner certainly did not disappoint – the food and the service were both excellent, and we enjoyed the people watching afforded by the other diners: two elderly women; two holiday parties; solo diners, book in hand; families; middle-aged couples out with friends. You will feel comfortable in touring clothes, but not out of place if you decide to dress up a bit. Despite the dining room being almost full, the noise level was low enough for our own easy conversation.

We highly recommend everything we ate. The mixed green salad with sautéed warm wild mushrooms in an herbed vinaigrette and the liver dumpling soup were both superb starters. For mains, we chose weinerschnitzel, served with the traditional warm potato salad (not quite tangy enough for our taste) and with red cabbage; also, roast goose with a wonderful bread dumpling, a mini-apple baked with ricotta and raisins, and the red cabbage. An excellent light rye bread with an herbed spread (which may contain duck or goose fat) accompanied all of this, and we had a carafe of spätburgunder, still water and two coffees. The total bill, including a 10% tip, was 101 Euros!

Several years ago, I visited this restaurant and had excellent Austrian dishes, including the best Strudel I've ever had. I was disappointed on this visit, although the restaurant clearly remains popular. The food was ok, but not what it previously was. No Strudel on the menu! Very good house red wine, however.

Fast quick review, excellent food, staff and one of the nicest red wines I ever had of the owner own winery.
