Description: Aigner restaurant in the heart of Mitte Berlin enjoys views of the charming Gendarmenmarkt from its terrace and vistas of the French and German cathedrals. Aigner has furnishings rescued from the legendary Café Aigner in Vienna, from the billiard table to the modernist Thonet furniture, wine bins along the walls and mirrored ceiling, giving an air of elegant restraint. Private groups may make use of the billiard room. This is a fine restaurant and watering-hole for Berlin’s high-fliers – like former Chancellor Schröder -- though award-winning chef-owner Herbert Beltle cares little for that moniker. Instead, he concentrates on using the freshest ingredients to create excellent regional Austrian and south German cuisine alongside newer, lighter inventions. Signature dish is Tafelspitz, served in a brass kettle with haunch and shoulder of beef, veg, savoy cabbage, crème fraiche and apple-flavoured horseradish. Other dishes include ice cream of potato-leek soup with fried scallops, pink-fried calf’s kidneys in mustard sauce with potatoes, and Tete de Moine with fig mustard. Strong wine list. A few steps from the Schauspielhaus theatre.

We were staying at the hotel and after a long day sightseeing wanted to grab food in the hotel restaurant. Booked a table at reception. When we went to the restaurant we had to wait with the non-hotel stayers for a table. This seemed strange since we were staying upstairs and had a table booked?!

Anyway, eventually got a table but the place was so busy it took ages for anything to happen. Waiting for menu, waiting for drinks, waiting to order.

The food was ok. We had much better. It is expensive you expect more. The starter was quite good. The main not so much. Dessert so-so.

Staff although helpful were over stretched and not particularly friendly.

We wouldn't bother eating there again. Plenty of other great restaurants in Berlin. If you want traditional German food go to Augustiner down the road. So much fun!

There is something about this restaurant that makes us feel like we are in Berlin. Had a very good evening here last fall and looked forward to returning. Enjoyed our experience so much we booked a second dinner. It is a big restaurant with a nice buzz, great wiener schnitzel and the best warm potato salad. We particularly like the service:friendly, professional and well paced. Would advise reservations, and try for a table by the windows.

Berlin is expensive, so this restaurant isn't cheap. However in comparison to many restaurants the Aigner represents very good value - good food at a reasonable price!

Service was good - we had a warm welcome and throughout our stay the waiters were attentive. The pace of the meal was just right - nice gaps between courses, not hurried but neither too slow.

They do a great Weiner Schnitzel and a very good duck, both around 22 Euro.

House wine was about 8 euro and a beer 3.5.

For our first meal in Berlin we were very satisfied!

I almost didn't eat here as I am not a fan of heavy German food. This duck was delicious. The picture of a duck is even on their business card . The duck was a bit like a duck confit:not fatty, crisp yet juicy. The service was excellent. The noise level when we were there quiet. I would eat there again. We were told that all their food is prepared in a "light" manner and not heavy. If you don't like duck their other dishes are suppose to be prepared well, too.

I am afraid I won't be able to review the food at this restaurant as from the moment we (myself, my husband and my 8 year old daughter) arrived, it went downhill pretty quickly and we left without touching the food. When we arrived just before 6.00 pm the restaurant was nearly empty. We asked for a table for three, the maitre d' showed us to the excuse me table next to the work station where my husband's seat was right on the passage way. We politely asked if we could sit to an other of the many free tables and were reluctantly shown the table next to it, same scenario. My husband decided to leave at this point irritated by it all and simply asked for our coats. The maitre d' showed up in the meantime and for some unknown reason turned on us and accused my husband of putting his hands in his face (he was reaching for our coats!) and told us to leave. He handled a nice three person family as poor tourists. What a shame, we then went back to our hotel, the Hotel de Rome, and had a great meal and service there instead.
