Description: For years, this place has been a must for fiends of traditional Austrian cooking, without chichi and flourishes. Here, everything is cooked by hand. The Wiener Schnitzel looms, just like before, beyond the plate. The frest country beer bubbles out of the basement. Those who can should not do wothout a sugared, cut-up pancake, the Kaiserschmarrn, with raisins.

“Decent Vienna schnitzel”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

Good food, reasonably quick service, reasonable price and pleasant surroundings situated in an agreeably quiet square. If you want a Vienna schnitzel cooked by an Austrian in an Austrian restaurant with an Austrian environment then you won't go wrong here. I drank a very good Austrian beer and the wife enjoyed her half litre of Austrian wine. You can eat outside if you like but the wooden panelling of the interior provides a very cosy atmosphere. Really decent holiday venue.

“Friendly Berliners guide us to this "Schnitzelschloss" !”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

We thought we knew how to get to the well-recommended "Austria" restaurant, but within minutes of leaving the U-Bahn station, looking for Bergmannstrasse, we felt lost (not all Berlin streets are signposted clearly enough for wandering tourists, it seems !), Since my "Better Half", M has good German, I persuaded her to stop and ask a young couple for help, and instantly, in perfect English, they pointed the way, highlighting landmarks to watch-out for. A few blocks later, puzzled by the building-numbers, we had to ask again - yet another couple cheerily guided us in our own language (we doubted this would happen in our own home City !)

Anyway, we finally found "Austria" (its front is quite "pub-like"), and smiled as we read the sign at the door saying credit cards couldn't be accepted to-day, owing to a "derangement" (!) M's language skills were very useful from here on, as staff dealt with us almost exclusively in German for the entire evening - an honourable exception was the 3rd Waiter who came to our table using a few words of English, and amazingly, smiled too !

Our table was in what a Trip Advisor contributor memorably described as a "dull & morgue-like back room" - it wasn't too bad, but the 24 seat room's location certainly didn't help the service (we wondered do all tourists get exiled here ?)

For food, we went with what "Austria" is famous for : M ordered a "House Special" Schnitzel dish (featuring in-season Asparagus), I went with the smaller of the two sizes of Schnitzel on the regular menu + we picked a Sauvignon Blanc from the short winelist.

The wine came first - it wasn't cool enough, but the waiter's attitude was "it came from the cooler, so too bad..." Our Mains arrived fairly promptly : our view was the Schnitzel was very good, but not "stunning". Portion size was fine, although the accompanying lemon wedge was a bit miserable. Waiters cleared away our plates quite quickly - there followed a long gap as the service then disappeared....

Our intrepid interpreter M went looking for a Waiter to take a dessert order (he was chatting at the kitchen-door) and there was another delay before the dish arrived (we shared a generous portion of the really tasty pancakes + fruit concoction of Austrian origin called "Kaiserschmarrn", I think).

Our Bill, for what was very good Food + a decent bottle of Wine, came to a reasonable Euro 90, including a Tip. Helpfully, our enquiry as to whether there was a Taxi-Rank nearby led to a Cab being summoned for us.

As we travelled back to the excellent "Circus Hotel", M's sharp question on the night's experience was "Is Austria really a rather cute pub which does one or two dishes well & treats foreigners as lesser beings to be kept at arm's length ?"

I could see where she was coming from - at no stage in the evening did we feel "welcome", but instead we seemed part of a quite cold "transaction". The message we got was "You will come, sit where we put you, eat our Schnitzel, pay us with CASH & we will say goodnight !" - a bit sad really, because it could be a much more memorable experience

“Delicious food – oversize Schnitzel”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

Together with a couple of very good friends we visited this very enjoyable restaurant serving solid courses from the traditional Austrian kitchen.
We ordered their famous “oversize Wiener schnitzel “and together with some pints of the local bier we did indeed have an enjoyable dinner.
Forget all about to take the “walk-in” chance – call them and make a reservation and for sure the staff will make you feel much better very soon.
