The Makoto is a very little place with a front room containing few tables and a further back room with some more lanrge tables where random people sit together. The ramen is fantastic and probably this is the reason why the place is so busy, while we were there for lunch I think about 3-4 couples and groups were turned away because there was no more space. If you like ramen, you will love this place.

We were intending on eating at Monsieur Vuong (popular Vietnamese restaurant on Alte Schönhauser Str) but there was a long queue outside the restaurant and it was raining. We noticed this appealing Japanese restaurant, Makoto, opposite. It was busy but there wasn't a queue so we decided to eat here instead. We didn't regret it, it was very good.

We shared some gorgeous starters (kimchi/ pickles, pork dumplings and tofu coated in a delicious miso sauce). For main course, my boyfriend had a big bowl of Toku miso ramen (spicy miso noodles soup with fried pork and vegetables) @ €8.50 and I had Yasai don (traditional Japanese rice bowl with vegetables, tofu + ginger sauce) @ €7.90, washed down with Asahi, a good dry Japanese lager. The total bill for two of us - as of September 2013 - was about 40 euros. All round good find.

The sauces definitely need to be worked on. The food was not bad, but I can´t say it tasted good. The best way I can describe it is like a German went to live in Japan, comes back and attempts to run a Japanese restaurant. The idea/food/ambiance might be "authentic" - but the taste is not. Surprising, as I saw only Japanese working there.

Quick, pleasant service & reasonable prices.
Nice atmosphere & clearly a popular place as was quite busy.
No sushi on the menu but plenty of other dishes to choose from.
