“Excellent Stay - Very Highly Reccommended”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

We booked this hotel through TA after reading the reviews and it met all our expectations. We would definitely stay here if we were to return to Berlin as the location, service and price cannot be beaten.

Location: Conveniently located just 50 metres outside Friedrichstrasse Station which is a central station and made getting to places a lot easier. It is great as a base to see all the major attractions of Berlin. When we arrived, we purchased a 'Welcome Card' for 36Euro which covers all public transport in Berlin but found we only used it twice because the hotel was so centrally located so next time we wouldn't get it again.

Attractions: As stated earlier, we walked nearly everywhere as major sites in Berlin can be accessible by foot. From the hotel, the Brandenberg Gate (Tor) and Bundestag was a 15 minute walk. Museum Island was also easily accessible in order to visit the Pergamon. We did a walking tour and also saw Checkpoint Charlie and Topography of Horrors and managed to walk back to the hotel from these location so if you've got comfortable shoes and want to see the city, this will be no problem.

Shopping: Heading in the other direction from the major attractions is a shopping strip along Friderichstrasse with stores such as H&M and some more up market stores. Next to the hotel is also a restaurant but we didn't try it and if you're in the mood for something cheaper, there's also a kebab shop 20 metres away as well. Within the train station is also a supermarket where you can get some snacks of your choice to have in the hotel room.

Major difference: Now to the hotel. We booked a standard room and I asked for a higher floor. The hotel was able to accommodate this and placed us on Level 6. The 'Level' starts on Level 7 so this was as high up as we could get for a standard room. In saying this, the room was excellent. With a large double bed we were able to move around the room comfortably. Being on level 6 we had an fantastic view of the river and the busy street down below. Don't worry about noise as you won't hear it due to to great sealing in the windows. The beds were very comfortable and there were many pillows provided. The bathroom came with an abundant of towels and floor heating which made all the difference when you're waking up for an early shower on a cold day! When we left for the day, we always came back to a well made up and clean room with new towels being provided.

Birthday Surprise: On our last night here was my birthday. After a few hours of sightseeing, we came back to a bottle of wine chilled in a bucket with two wine glasses ready for us to enjoy. This was a pleasure to start with prior to going out to dinner.

Overall: An excellent and well deserved position by the Melia Berlin in terms of ranking on TA. For 4 nights, we paid 71 Euros a night and thought this was well worth the price. We had to catch an early flight to Athens the following day at 3:45am and reception also arranged for a taxi without any issues. Well done Melia Berlin for making our stay at your establishment so memorable!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on Level 6 if choosing just a standard room as the view is worth it.

We've chosen this hotel booking it directly on internet mainly because of its central position in Berlin and we accepted to take part to the affiliation program. We paid something extra for "The Level" room 744, but it was well worth of. Many benefits offered, a perfect service, skilled and gentle staff, quality room, food and extras. Personal attention to the client. A very good fitness and spa centre. A perfect restaurant "Madrid" with an exceptional chef-cook offering refined creative plates. Last but not least a central position, everything can be visited by foot, the museum island just a few steps away. We certainly come back to Melià when again in Berlin (our 4th time!).

Room Tip: Pay something extra for "The Level" and get the top in quality, service, best view.

This hotel is great. On one of the main streets in downtown Berlin between the museum island and the Brandenburg gate. Stayed here over Christmas 2012. Staff were excellent. The standard rooms were a good size for a city centre hotel. The bar was good and was popular as it was also a tapas restaurant. It was necessary to open the window at night due to the heat of the rooms and the lack of air conditioning in winter. I am noticing this more and more with hotels now and I tend to look to see if the windows are openable. Breakfast buffet was complete but at 22 Euros is a bit of a luxury. The room rate was very good but it was over the Christmas period.
I would return to this hotel when I return to Berlin.
There are lots of bus trips you can take around Berlin and they are worth it to get the layout. Museum island is amazing. Checkpoint Charlie is still there and you can see preserved parts of the wall. Sachsenhausen concentration camp at Oranienburg is worth visiting if you are interested. The camp set up on the edge of Berlin for training and camp development.
Tegel is the main international airport but Shoenfeld is where the low cost airlines land. However this is soon to be replaced by Brandenberg airport.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep with the window open the rooms away from Friedrichstrasse are probably better...

Booked with booking.com for the 26th sept. Arrived ... Found a mistake had been made (not ours) and we were booked for 26 th dec. asked if room avail and male receptionist laughed at me saying 'not our problem'. Asked him booking for 26 th dec to be cancelled ... Receptionist rolled his eyes and turned away. Next day booking.com email and apologise saying we can now stay at Melia Berlin. We decline because of how we were treated and ask booking.com to cancel our booking for 26th dec. yesterday we get an email from booking.com and Melia Berlin saying 'sorry we didn't arrive and for that it was going to cost us 200€ for the 3 nights we didn't use' having told them 3 months earlier to cancel the booking!!! We have travelled Europe for the past 6 months and not once have we experienced such poor customer service and blatant rudeness from a hotel. I would steer clear of this place if I were you. We have travelled the world as previously mentioned managing all our accommodation bookings and this would be our worst experience ever!!!

Room Tip: We stayed Holiday inn and they were fabulous.

Stayed a few times in the Melia, mainly only when I couldn't get into other favoured Berlin hotels or if the Melia had a great price deal going....other than that it wasnt my hotel of choice. That wasn't because it was bad, but mostly cause of its slightly out of centre location ( bit depends on yo preference) and cause it was just a little boring compared with some of the other great Berlin hotels. The tapas restaurant is however v good as to the breakfast.....the staff are ok- ish......like I said I would find another hotel first (check out my other Berlin hotel reviews) before booking here, but if you end up here it's all "ok"....oh and I would give it 2.5 if I could rather than 3 ....but I can't :).

We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights during our visit to Berlin for the Xmas markets and we could not complain. The hotel is excellent value for money and in a great location on a main road almost opposite to a main train station feeding the airport (3.5 euros from airport to hotel by train and very easy; 40 euros in taxi) and within 15 mins walk to the main attractions. We did not have breakfast so cant comment on that but we did enjoy a nice bottle of wine and tapas in the tapas bar attached to the hotel. Overall very happy with our stay.

Room Tip: We were on floor 4 over looking the river and it was very nice.

My wife and I spent 3 nights here on a short visit to Berlin ( December 2012 ).
Having researched the Melia website and the reviews on TripAdvisor I deliberately booked a room on "the level", therefore this review is based on our experience of this standard of accomodation.
Our stay got off to a good start, speedy check-in with both of my room requests catered for ( a balcony and a view ).It is always a great start to a hotel visit when you know your requests have been considered.
We were allocated room 745 which overlooks the street and has a side view of the river. At no time did we have any problems with traffic noise.
Our room was spacious enough with a massive bed ( with lots of pillows to choose from ), plenty of storage, and a flat screen TV ( limited english-speaking channels ).
Bathroom was fine, there is a shower over bath, a bidet and some freebies ( sewing kit, shaving kit, toileteries etc. ).
Booking The Level turned out to be a great decision. This is a great concept and I'm sure it would be popular if it was available in more hotel's. The great thing about The Level lounge was that it was a relaxing environment with snacks and drinks freely available until 10pm which is a great option to have after a hard day's sightseeing. Breakfast is also served here if you wish and there is everything ( hot & cold ) you will require to give you a good start to the day. It also has the added bonus of wi-fi which I noticed is quite expensive if you have to pay for it. If you don't have your own device The Level has a couple of PC's for customer use.
I feel I must make special mention to our Level concierge, Nina Fiedler, who was informative, friendly, helpful and she proved to be the perfect hostess.
Our stay included a special 30 Euro per day spend ( booking direct with The Melia website ) but we struggled to use it up. The Hotel restaurant ( The Madrid ) was tapas which isn't to our taste but it looked very nice and the setting is good, overlooking the river. It is possible to roll up your 30 Euros per day allowance and use it here for a meal, so if you like Spanish/Tapas food you are onto a winner.

Location-wise the hotel is well placed, a few major attractions are within walking distance but public transport in the shape of under and over ground trains, trams, buses.

Our Late check-out request was not a problem and ended our stay on another positive note.

I would definitely return to this hotel if we ever re-visit Berlin and I can highly recommend it if you are looking for a hotel which is affordable with great extras.

Room Tip: I would not have a problem asking for a street/river view if we returned but not sure if the lower r...
