“Very big, very basic”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

Location wise this is a great spot. Most of what you want to see as a first time visitor is in walking distance. It is also very priced very reasonably. What you get is very basic.

We stayed in an apartment that slept 9 in three separate rooms. The decor was very tired, the wifi was not working, but it was clean. There were some holes in the internal walls, but you didn't notice them after a few beers. :)

The front desk staff were friendly and efficient. They just couldn't sort out the wifi, which was a real pain for us.

I'd recommend this place for those on a budget / stag party. Not for those on a romantic weekend.

If you are looking for pampering, the Apartments am Brandenburger Tor is not the spot for you. There is no breakfast included, no maid service and no air conditioning.
But if you want a nice place to stay – one that offers a taste of old East Germany blended with the new – this place fits the bill, especially in September when it isn’t too hot outside.
It is a large apartment building that reaches around a block and fronts on three streets. It is a 5-minute walk from the Brandenburg Gate – where all sorts of tours and public transportation are available.
Don’t be deceived by the drab grey outside. Inside, our apartment was fresh, light and clean. We chose a two bedroom because it appeared that the one-bedroom units had only a double bed (too small for sometimes sleep-challenged seniors). The tab for a 2-bedroom was about $150/night.
The apartment included a hair dryer and even a washing machine (no dryer but a drying rack.)
Years ago, just months after the Wall came down and before the formal German reunification, we stayed near the Ku’damm in West Germany, but ventured into east Germany near the Brandenburg gate. The area then was far removed from the Madison Avenue feel of the Ku’damm.
We wanted to see how the neighborhood had changed. There are still many grey buildings. Two decades did not change that. But now there are many street-level eateries -- German, Italian, American (steak house), Indian, Thai and even a vegetarian. A bakery (with outside seating on warm days) fills the breakfast void.
Staying in this area of the city filled us with a sense of history. We couldn’t help but think the former east German workers (likely officials given the location) who lived here with their families. They, no doubt, looked out the window to the west, where the tops of skyscrapers can be seen. This is a world away from the other side of the city, but a great location.

Room Tip: If it's important to you make sure your apartment is in a building with an elevator

Great place to stay, apartment for 8 was big! One room though has bed for 4 and two rooms were for 2 people each. Kitchen has everything you need to cook simple meals but no microwave just oven. Take taxi from Tegel airport, not expensive and will save you walking time! Subway close by and grocery too.

The best aspect was how spacious the apartment was! Huge bedroom with plenty of room for us and two small children and all our bags. Also great location near Brandenburg gate, modern furniture, neat, clean. Couldn't have asked for better in this price range.

The apartment was very spacious and functional. The buildings and arrangements of the rooms will remind you of the communist East Berlin. Good thing the communists back then installed elevators. The location was the best. It's very near the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial. If you plan to go to the American and British Embassy, this might be the best place to be.

Room Tip: If you're a group, get the room for 8! It's the best.

My wife , son and I stayed in these Apartments from Sunday 9th to Thursday 13th Sept. It is a fantastic location to see a lot of the sights on foot. We had great weather so as well as been around the corner to the Memorial site and the sight of Hitlers bunker it was only a 5 minute walk to the Brandenburg gate ,Unter den Linden and about 15 to Check-point-Charlie. There are lots of places to eat around the corner , some ok and some not so good. There is a huge supermarket about 10 min walk . The S bahn and U bahn very close some 5 mins some 10 mins . The Apartments dont look much from the outside but are excellent on the inside, with lots of space. The receptionist staff are very helpful. We took the Regional express train from Shonfeld Airport to Hauptbanhof station , about half an hour and the U55 to Brandenburg Station, about five mins. An ABC train ticket for 3.10 euro per person will cover the whole journey. If going to Berlin i will stay here again.

Room Tip: There were 3 of us so we took a two room Apartment. An excellent choice for us.

We got an apartment on 7th floor, it had only be partly renovated. The location was very good and there was a nice view, partly over the Holocaust Memorial. The Brandenburg Gate is short walk away, Potsdamer Platz also and Alexander Platz takes about 15-20 min. Very good public transport (buses) in the area and only few meters to next bus station.

The bad things, the elevator went only 6 floors up, you have to climb the stairs to the apartment 703. These are "East German" buildings, not the same quality as in the west part, some windows could not be opened, no A/C or fan (it was very hot this time 34+ °C), so we had to have all windows open, lots of street noise and of course the trash was picket up at 05.00 in the morning and that did not go on quietly.

Very spartanic electrical installations, bathroom only partly renovated, kitchen was OK but the fridge is a bit small. I could get Wi-Fi access for moderate fee. There was a bathtub and a handshower but a real shower would have been much better. Washing powder for the dishwasher and the washing machine was missing (or not included). You have to do your own cleaning of the apartment while you stay.

This company has many apartments around this area and I'm sure that not all of them are like this, so don't ask for apartment 0703 at Hannah-Arendt Strasse 4 unless you are prepared for the above!

ps. A visit to the holocaust memorial is a must!
