“Beware of the Lux 11!”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

Lux 11 is false advertising on their web site. There is NO restaurant or bar in this hotel. The rooms DO NOT look like they do on the web page. They do charge extra for using the air conditioner and internet which for us ran the price up so we could have stayed at a much nicer place in the end. The initial room we where put in was dirty with hair on the sheets and yellowed areas on the white sheets (ugh!). They did move us but with a poor attitude.

Perfect location in Mitte. I booked a spacious suite with a little fridge etc. Room looked a little bit worn in places but very nice otherwise. Street noise may be an issue on the lower floors. Airco was not functioning properly. Very good value for money.

This hotel is very interesting. To get to your room you have the option of one very small and slow elevator or lots of stairs. The room I had was a very large, single bed room. The room had lots of space for bags in the large closet area. There was also a small kitchenette and a very tiny bathroom. This room had no desk, but instead a bar top like area with bar stools on one end of the room, along with a living room area that had a couch and small TV. On the opposite side of the room, separated by a wall partition with closets, was the bed, sink, shower and another tiny TV. The bed was very uncomfortable and only had a small comforter barely large enough for one person. The shower, which was next to the bed, had three steps to get up and three steps to get down into the tub area. The shower had a rain head and a handheld shower wand. The rain head didn't work very well, but the handheld wand was great.
There is no air conditioning in the hotel rooms. Apparently you have to somehow purchase air conditioning from the front desk. Because there is no air conditioning, I was forced to open the windows in the room to get any type of air flow and cooling, which made the room VERY noisy. At night, you can either close the windows to reduce the traffic noise and have the room be warm and stuffy, or leave the windows open and endure the noise all night. The curtains were very thin and did very little to block the light at night, so the room remained fairly lit throughout the night, making it hard to sleep. There is very little lighting in the room, so when you actually need lighting, you don't have much to choose from. The internet had decent speeds and was reliable.
The hotel is in a good location and a short train ride to the Berlin tourist areas.

This hotel in well located with shops and restaurants nearby and close to the sights and transport. A free laundry downstairs was a godsend. However the extras were annoying. Wifi, air conditioning and breakfast are all extra charges. 15 Euro per day for wifi is too expensive. The decor is unusual but funky and the staff were reasonably friendly. The room was clean, the bathroom could do with some maintenance, design over function and the shower is open and everything gets wet. Also, on a double bed, we were given two small single quilts folded like sleeping bags which I've never experienced before.

Hotel Lux 11 is a quirky apartment hotel conveniently located close to the major station of Alexanderplatz in former East Berlin. The room we had was an executive suite and included a comfortable large bed with a choice of pillows, a lounge area, desk, bath/shower and toilet and small, well-stocked kitchenette, and 2 TVs. The toilet has a separate cubicle with a door (but no lock) but the basin and bath/shower were right in the bedroom. The bath is a rectangular shape built like a wall. The plug did not work in ours, so we only used the showers (rain forest and hand-held options). The generous desk has 2 stools which we appreciated, as we could both work on our computers at the same time. Wi-fi and breakfast were not included in our room price, which was disappointing. We found the girls at the front desk very willing but not at all knowledgeable, not a proper concierge. Also this hotel has an unusual privacy policy- you must ask to have your room cleaned by hanging a sign on the door. The default is that no-one will bother you.

We stayed from March 25th-28th to celebrate my partner’s birthday. We were in the Penthouse which has two bedrooms, two baths, two sitting areas, a kitchen, dining room, wood burning fireplace, and patio. Fixtures and furnishings were high end- think Duravit deep soaking tub- very nice after a day of touring. If you book through the Lux-11 website site, you are offer a discounted rate to upgrade to the Penthouse if available at check-in. Go for it. The beds were extremely comfortable and enough space for two couples traveling together. Our friend had the Value Room (the lowest category room) to herself. I believe it was room 315. It was also very spacious, by European and New York standards. This room category is fine for a couple as well. This room was also very modern and luxurious with a nice view of the T.V. tower.
The hotel itself is in an excellent location. (Thanks to fellow Tripadvisor reviewers for this choice.) Excellent boutiques, restaurants, and galleries in the area. Late night/early morning, there’s a great snack stand around the corner that has tasty Turkish pizza. BTW, directly across the street, there’s a great boutique is for the “in the know.” It looks like a vacant retail space without any indication or signs that it’s open. If all white is a reception table in the middle and a vase with flowers. By the entrance, there’s a little plaque that reads “Apartment.” You ring the doorbell, get buzzed in, go down a spiral stair well and you’re in an edgy boutique. Think Rick Owens and the like. We only heard of Apartment through another retailer.
Back to Lux 11. Lobby was hip and chill-out kool. Front desk staff was always friendly, professional, and helpful. The décor was modern & edgy without seeming to be trying so hard. Really the vibe of Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood, in general, is a very relaxed low key kool. I also think it’s kool that the hotel was once apartments for KGB.
Overall, very comfortable, excellent location, and great staff. Nothing to fault. We will return.

Room Tip: Book through hotel website and sign up for upgrade with reduced surcharge if available at check-in...
