Isherwood's Neighbourhood Walking Tour

Owner description: Starting and ending at Nollendorfplatz, this 90-minute tour visits the neighbourhood British writer Christopher Isherwood lived in during his time in Berlin in the last years of the Weimar Republic and where he wrote his famous Berlin diaries, which were to become the iconic film & stage musical, Cabaret. The walk includes readings from his novels and diaries and takes in the sights he wrote about and the cafes, bars and clubs he frequented. Taste the city as he saw it in those uncertain times, where Cabaret was born, genders were blurred and a film premiere caused riots! Tours are usually on Saturday at 11am, but other times are available by arrangement.

“Fascinating”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

The Isherwood walking tour was one of my absolute favorite experiences in Berlin. I can't really convey how fascinating and knowledgeable the tour guide Brendan was, you will have to find this out for yourself. Our small tour followed him through the streets learning about the fantastic (and totally hidden!) cabarets that used to line the streets of Berlin. As well as telling us about Isherwood and all the characters he would have encountered we also learnt a lot about the buildings and the history of the city itself. It was a fun and fascinating way to discover the city.

The tour is really just the tip of the iceberg of Brendan's knowledge about this era - he writes an amazing blog about the cabaret scene where you can follow his work even after the tour http://www.cabaret-berlin.com/

“A must do”
Reviewed July 30, 2013 via mobile

The guide was fantastic, spoke really good English. Walk didn't feel too taxing in the heat would recommend taking water though and be ready for a walk back (around 30 minutes). Would really recommend as there isn't many signs explaining buildings so is a lot nicer to know some history also may be quite hard to find your way round alone.

“Fantastic Isherwood tour with a fantastic guide”
Reviewed February 23, 2013 via mobile

Brendan was a fantastic guide. This is a must if you have an interest in Christopher Isherwood and the Berlin cabaret era. Not only did Brendan provide insights of the history of Berlin during the late 20s and early 30s, the period when Isherwood lived in the city, he also pointed out many other interesting aspects of the area - things we would never have discovered were it not for Brendan's local knowledge.
