This former Stasi prison facility should not be missed. It is a fair ride outside the tourist loop of the city but is essential to know and appreciate Germany's Cold War history. Many of the guides are former inmates. You have to call ahead for an English-language tour.

It is really a shame that the former Stasi prison in Berlin - Hohenschönhausen can hardly be found in any guide book of Berlin. I was deeply impressed when visiting it this spring and consider it one of the must-sees of any Berlin visit. If you want to understand what the German Democtatic Republic was all about - take a tour through this memorial site. Former inmates show you where they and thousands of other Germans were once taken to be interrogated and tortured. This is history coming alive!
After our visit to Hohenschönhausen we watched the Oscar-winning German film "The Lives of Others" in which this prison plays a role. We could understand the portrait of life in der GDR so much better then.
So do not miss a visit to Hohenschönhausen. Not a beuatiful place to see but a necessary trip!!!

Not an 'A' list attraction in Berlin but worth mentioning.
Basically this was a secret Stazi prison that was used from the end of WW2 right up to the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989.
Only when the wall fell did the West know of it's existence.
Mostly political prisoners were kept here or people trying to flee to the West.
There was a plentiful supply of prisoners too. With over 90,000 Stazi staff and twice that number of informants people were frequently being dragged in with a hood over their head.
The place is well preserved and with the gun towers and barbed wire around the perimeter one cannot help but feel a chill.
The wing notoriously called the 'U-Boat' is particularly grim as prisoners were kept in a windowless cell with the light on 24/7 - when they were not being tortured.
There are 120 interrogation rooms which were all being used at the same time by interrogation staff (3 were assigned to each prisoner). Most rooms still have the same wallpaper and furniture.
The tour is cheap - 3 euros and normally led by an ex-inmate, so you get prison life 'from the horses mouth' so to speak. It lasts about 2 hours. Be careful to ask for an English speaking guide as most tours are conducted in German.
This place is only to be recommended if you have a particular interest in this subject as it is a bit out of the way.
But it is food for though that it was still being used only 17 years ago and is a chapter of recent German history that would some would rather not be reminded of. However people should remember what happened there because that kind of thing is still going on in some parts of the world.
