We visited Berlin last year and we heard about this prison cell being as a museum. We visited the prison on a Sunday morning We didn't know about the 2.30pm tour of the prison and we didn't have time to stay for it so we decided to take the audio guide around the museum. This place has only one main room with stopping points to listen to eye witness accounts of the brutality of the prison. The accounts are narrated very coldly, with no dram. Some of the narrations basically made shivers down the spine . Some of the accounts narrated were brutal than you might think of , so parental advisory is recommended if minors are visiting with you. Although I missed the main tour but still it was worth the try.

We were invited to the tour of this one-time political detention centre and were surprised and impressed by the impact that this place has on its visitors. The guides are very well informed (some of them indeed are previous inmates) and the tour leaves one with a real and humbling ability to reflect on the consequences of such an internment. In many ways, this is a "must" if visiting Berlin for the first time.

A bit further out from the city but Tram 5 will get you there from Alexander Platz. There is an English tour at 2.30pm on Sundays. I gather from some reviews you might be lucky and get an ex prisoner as a guide - we were very lucky with a young German historian who spoke excellent English and clearly knew her stuff. She was able to recount true stories from her colleagues and other sources about experiences in the prison. The conditions must have been terrible, but although it sounds a bit of a grim experience, do go as you will learn a lot! Get off at the Freinenwalder Strasse stop, retrace your steps back to the junction the tram just passed and turn to the left onto the road of the same name as the stop. The prison is ahead of you at the end of the road.

Basically worth seeing. For 5 euro entrance you get a guided tour of 1.5 hours Since the tours (at least partially) be carried out by former East German opposition, of course, resonates with a political stance during the tour. This applies to classify it accordingly. Overall the tour is very informative and gives a very depressing insight into the system DDR.

There's the East Side Gallery which is great but this place, slightly 'off the beaten track', is definitely worth a visit. One of the bus tour companies does actually go here - the Wall and Lifestyle Tour. The site at Bernhauer Strasse retains sections of the Wall and is laid out out to demonstrate how the security at the Wall worked - complete with the descriptions of the death strip. There is also a simple memorial to the people who died attempting to cross the wall. It is very moving.
