“Checkpoint Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2012

My wife and I decided on a Capital City Break and having chosen Berlin as our destination, with the help of Trip Advisor we decided to stay at the Hotel Angleterre. We read about 10/12 reviews regarding the hotel and all were very positive, so we took the plunge and booked in for 4 nights in April. We were not disappointed in either Berlin or the Hotel. The Hotel location is spot on Checkpoint Charlie, which during the cold war, formed a very significant part of Berlin's more recent history. We had a small but spotlessly clean room on the 5th floor which of a night was wonderfully quite as this hotel is positioned slightly away from the more active part of the city. However the local underground station (line U6) is literally across the road and from there you can travel anywhere within Berlin's historical city. We included the breakfast in our booking and with a mixture of hot and cold food, along with fruit and cereal, was more than adequate for any palate. The staff are astute, helpful, intelligent and very informative regarding Berlin's tourist hot spots and lucky for us spoke perfect English as our German leaves a lot to be desired. We never actually had an evening meal in the hotel however the menu look extensive and the price was reasonable for a City hotel, with even a two for one offer over the weekend. We both enjoyed our visit to Berlin and if we ever returned would have no hesitation in booking the Angleterre again. Lastly if you have time, spend a few hours in Potsdam which is about an hour away from Berlin by train (line S7). A wonderful German historic town on beautiful lakes and rivers, very relaxing.

just got back from a 4 nights easter trip to Berlin. flew to schønefeld airport..( old airpot... but the new one Brandenburg is opening in may) took the S- bahn to friedrichstrasse station( ca 30 min) and a taxi from there to Angleterre hotel. ( lot of traffic , better off taking U-bahn to Coch station which is right outside the hotel) very friendly staff at hotel. got a suite #114... clean ,very spacious rooms, with two 42 " flat screens & bathroom brand new....top notch.the room faced the street and had ok view..did the breakfasts across the street, all good. (hotel breakfast was 17 euro per .person, and we paid 1/3 of that). hotel Bar "die bar" was nice & good service..checkpoint charlie just down the street, we took the hop on/off bus one day , but this was so so.. could`nt hear the guide.. no earplugs but speaker ...noisy engine from the bus. take the U-bahn or just walk to typology of terror, & brandenburger tor & reich tag. visited Berlin zoo.. do this if good weather...lots of shopping possibilities in potsdamer platz..would recommende this hotel.

Room Tip: go for a suite if want some good space,

Well everything is really near :) Undeground station, cafes (that's why we didn't take breakfast in the hotel - cost nearly 16 euro - whereas in oppisite to the hotel cafe good breakfast was 6 euro). To the museum island by food (if you dont like metro) near 20-25 min - you go accross shops, small museums, restaurants (very pleasant hiking). Very much recommended!

We spent 4 days in Berlin in this amazing hotel. The price was quite affordable for a 4 stars hotel and we were very happy with our stay. The staff was really nice: the man at the reception desk was very kind with all the guests and the cleaning staff was super nice too. The room was big, comfortable, with a huge tv, an extremely clean bathroom, and the drinks in the minibar were free!!! I loved this detail because I always think that the prices of those drinks are ridiculous. One of the best things of this hotel was the breakfast buffet. Fresh, tasty and with all the food you can imagine!! I really recommend it. In Southern Europe we don't use to eat that much at breakfast, but I think that people from USA, and other countries more used to tis big breakfasts will enjoy it very much. One night we also ordered dinner from the room service and it was really nice too and not too expensive.
Regarding its location, it is perfect. You have an underground station (Koch Strasse) 50 meters away from the hotel but also you can walk to the most important turistic places.
If you are looking for a nice, quiet, comfortable place to stay in berlin, you should choose this hotel. And don't forget the breakfast!

We stayed at Angleterre Hotel last week (29 Jan - 1 Feb, 2012). It is in a great location - literally a 2 minute walk to Checkpoint Charlie where you can hop on tourist buses (if that is your thing) and the U Bahn Station of Kochstrasse is just across the road.
If you turn right outside the hotel towards Checkpoint Charlie and along Friedrichstrasse you'll head up towards some nice shops (all closed on a Sunday) and the large Friedrichstrasse S Bahn.
Turn left out of the hotel and you can head to Kreuzeberg for the edgier independent stores, cafes and bars but jumping on the U Bahn will get you there much quicker.
The hotel is nice, clean and unfussy. We didn't really have much interaction with the hotel staff other than check in and out but they were pleasant.
Breakfast was great; one day was continental with a great selection of cheese, meats, cereals, yoghurts and fruits. The other days there was also a hot breakfast too. It is buffet style and certainly sets you up for the day.
The rooms are quite plain and also unfussy but importantly they are spotlessly clean. Nothing fancy pretty basic but we were only in them to sleep as were out exploring the rest of the time.
Totally recommend the hotel for a couple of days exploring Berlin - great location and a cracking breakfast!

We just spent 2 nights at Angleterre Hotel .
Hotel is really close to Check Point Charlie, 400 meters far from Topography of Terror , 700 meters far from Jewish museum… others Berlin’s tourist attraction are not so far but as last weekend temperature in Berlin was -16 degrees it was "hard" to walk so we used “city circle tourist bus” that brings you basically everywhere ( it cost 22€ for 2 days ticket) and during winter is a great transport option.
Hotel is clean, quite and standard rooms are big enough (with 40 inches flat TV and free wi fi). Breakfast costs 17€ but we had just coffee and cake at Starbucks just 1 block from hotel.
Minibar (just soft drinks) was included in our booking.
Taxi ride from Tegel airport to the hotel cost around 20€ and takes about 20 minutes.
So hotel is not really centrally located but during spring/summer could be a good options even if you have to walk a little bit to join all Berlin attractions.
