Owner description: The German Historical Museum presents itself in two buildings: In the unique Baroque Zeughaus and the neighbouring modern exhibition hall designed by the Chinese-American architect Ioeh Minh Pei. The 300-year old Zeughaus is one of the most important buildings of the Baroque period in Berlin and the oldest buildings at the boulevard Unter den Linden. In 2006 the Permanent Exhibition “German History in Images and Artefacts” was inaugurated here; it showcases 2000 years of eventful and enthralling German history as seen within its European context. 8000 selected objects from the extensive collections of the German Historical Museum furnish valuable evidence of history and reveal, on a surface area of 8000 square meters, a fascinating and vivid picture of the past. Supplementing the Permanent Exhibition are specialized temporary exhibitions displayed in the fascinating exhibition building designed by I.M. Pei. The spacious new structure with its glass and steel entrance lobby and distinctive winding staircase was opened in 2003. Definitive events and facets of German history are presented in a variety of special exhibitions on the four floors of the new building.

Well presented history of Germany. Especially found the section on the 20th Century very interesting. We went there twice on our trip and still couldn't take it all in.

“It takes a whole day to see it.”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Very rich history of Germany. It would take a whole day to really enjoy the contents. We only have a half a day. So we had to run through it very quickly toward the end of the exhibit.

This museum is superb. The museum is composed of two sections. The history of Germany is presented in uncrowded, will illuminated and beautifully presented displays in the large original section of the museum. They even have the cap Napoleon wore at the battle of waterloo!

A rather unsympathetic and confusing modern addition furnishes space for special presentations and temporary displays. Presently they have The "Death of Diversity" display that I found very moving. They also had a fun display of nostalgic German travel posters that I loved.

Only 8E admission and easily worthy of 2-3 hours.

“Great Museum for History Buffs”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

This museum takes you on a guided tour through German history from pre-Roman times through Reunification. The museum is well laid out chronographically, and the historical artifacts from each time period are excellent. The museum has a mix of military, everyday life, religious, and artistic displays. You can spend as much time as desired in each area. Picture taking is allowed. I highly recommend the renting an audio tour guide (3 Euro). The audio guide will take you on 1 hour highlights tours or allow you to enjoy a 4 to 5 hour detailed tours. The exhibits are number and you can get commentary on most of the items in the museum as well as addition reference information on the time period, daily life, military conflicts, key figures, etc. There is still plenty to read in English if you do not rent the audio guide. I spent 4 hours in the museum only because I had a time constraint that did not allow me to stay longer. If you are a history buff like me or just interested in learning little more about German/European history, you will enjoy this museum.
